Multiplayer survival game Rust has reached a peak of 262,284 active users on Steam, 11 years after its launch. Rust’s executive producer took to social media to celebrate this achievement and shared with players what they can expect from the game in 2025.

Rust came out in early access in 2013, with a full release in 2018. The game’s survival approach places players in the wilderness to collect resources to meet their basic needs while defending themselves from different threats. Rust has maintained its popularity even in the face of newer and more sophisticated titles, partly because of the consistent stream of updates provided by the developer. Even 11 years after its early access release, Rust has managed to break a new record.

Rust’s executive producer Alistair McFarlane took to Twitter to celebrate the game’s new CCU. Rust beat its previous concurrent player milestone, peaking at 259,646 players in 24 hours. McFarlane thanked the community of players for all their support, mentioning that the studio never believed it would manage to surpass the previous CCU. Rust currently holds a “very positive” rating on Steam, with 87% of 962,104 users recommending the game. In a follow-up post, McFarlane shared with players what they can expect from Rust moving forward.

Rust Peaked at 259,646 Players in 24 Hours

On the game’s official webpage, the developer teased some of Rust’s 2025 upcoming content along with statistics showing how well the game performed in 2024. It saw over 325 million game sessions, 40 million hours played, and more than 5.5 million unique players. Additionally, the developer reassured players that it will be releasing consistent monthly updates to bring new content, quality-of-life improvements, and tackle bugs on the first Thursday of every month.

The next big addition is expected to land on February 6, when Rust will release the Primitive update, described by the developer as “one of the most impactful updates to date.” It will bring big changes to crucial aspects of the game, like combat. It will also add new weapons to Rust’s arsenal, vehicles, and game modes. Among these, players can expect a siege tower, catapults, ballistae, and the battering ram. The Primitive update will also improve horses and bring new skins.

But the Primitive update is just one of many things the developer has prepared for players. “We have a ton of content currently in development,” it says, teasing changes to food management, new biomes, and hardcore game modes. Finally, the developer promised to keep working on the game’s performance as well as addressing cheating issues. While the game celebrates its new milestone, Rust players have a lot of upcoming content to look forward to.

You wake naked on a mysterious island armed only with a rock and a torch. You’ll need to brave natural dangers (from heat and cold to thirst and starvation), build a shelter, eat (or be eaten), scavenge materials. Explore the island, its abandoned settlements, mysterious monuments and the factions that occupy them. But, above all, watch out for other survivors...

Design and build bases to defend your territory or control the resources of the island. Research the tech tree, grow farms, command electricity, commandeer vehicles from horses to cars to boats to helicopters. Whatever it takes to get ahead.

There are no rules in Rust but the ones you make for yourself. Craft tools, armor and weapons to defend yourself. Cooperate with friends and allies and build a town together. Explore the island and what’s happening in it. Trade with other players. Or prey on them, raiding their bases and taking their hard-won goods.
