Some of the classic Twisted Metal games may be coming back in a new re-release in 2025, according to the voice of one of the series’ most iconic characters. The first Twisted Metal game was released on the original PlayStation in 1995 and introduced players to a dark world of brutal vehicular combat and colorful killer drivers. It became a commercial success, spawning numerous sequels and kickstarting a genre of demolition derby games that have attempted to replicate its formula with varying degrees of success.
The Twisted Metal series would enter a period of dormancy following a 2012 reboot on the PS3. However, interest in the series was swiftly renewed following the release of a live-action series on Peacock last summer, though there haven’t been any new game announcements since. A new, live-service Twisted Metal game was reportedly in development at Firesprite, but it would ultimately be canceled in the wake of a massive wave of layoffs at Sony earlier this year.
While there might not be any new Twisted Metal projects on the horizon, fans might get the chance to play some of the classic entries on modern hardware soon. J.S. Gilbert, the voice behind the homicidal ice cream truck driver Sweet Tooth in a few of the old Twisted Metal games, recently commented on a Reddit user’s post claiming to have heard rumors of a “special release” of Twisted Metal: Head-On, Twisted Metal 2, and Twisted Metal: Black. According to Gilbert, these classic titles are being “refreshed” for some sort of bundle that will supposedly be released at some point in 2025.
Sweet Tooth Voice Actor Hints at Twisted Metal Re-Release
The actor also said that he would be willing to return as the voice of Sweet Tooth in a new Twisted Metal game, but he suspects that Will Arnett would reprise his role from the Twisted Metal TV series instead. This is the first time anyone has mentioned the possibility of Arnett being cast in the games, but this move could capitalize on the success of the show to bring in new players, even if it does leave purists divided.
Right now, there is no official word of any new Twisted Metal game projects, be they a new entry or a remastered collection of older titles like Twisted Metal: Black or Twisted Metal: Head-On. Next year will mark the 30th anniversary of the original Twisted Metal, so a nostalgic re-release of some kind would be fitting.
