"In Scream 7, AI will be part of the plot to bring back some of the original killers," the tweet reads. It had been announced earlier that Matthew Lillard and Scott Foley would join the upcoming movie. Both were among the original Ghostface killers. Lillard played Stu Macher, one of the OG killers in the first Scream movie released in 1996. Foley portrayed Roman Bridger, the killer in Scream 3 (2000). Scream 3 was the only movie in the franchise with one killer and featured a family drama twist. Roman is Sidney's (Neve Campbell) long-lost half-brother. He was jealous of her life and angry that their mom abandoned him.

The news about the use of AI has received mixed responses from fans. Some were not surprised because they had reportedly heard about it in the past. "It's a popular theory. I personally don't like it, seems pointless and gimicky," one reacted about the issue on Reddit. It can copy one's image and voice, making the return of Lillard and Foley's characters reasonable since both were dead. However, some argued that while Foley's Roman's death was clear to them, they weren't sure if Lillard's Stu died. Sidney threw a TV on Stu's head and he was presumed dead because he appeared to have been electrocuted.

AI has many applications and it's the easiest way to bring back dead characters, like the OG killers in the franchise. Scream 7 could use deepfake technology to create a "lost" recording of Roman talking about his backup plan or de-age Foley for a flashback to show he faked his death. They could do the same to Lillard's Stu, like show footage where he survived in the hospital after the incident where he was presumed dead because his body was never buried. They could also use the same technology to manipulate reports and security footage, hinting that Stu was alive to mess with Sidney. The use of AI to resurrect past killers could give the upcoming movie a modern horror twist. However, this should be done properly and convincing to the audience; otherwise, if it feels forced, it could subject the film to harsh criticism. While the use of AI remains unclear, one thing is certain, Mason Gooding said the Ghostface in Scream 7 is “the most brutal he's been.”
