According to a new rumor, Sega might be bringing back Sonic Heroes as either a brand-new game or a remake of the 2003 Sonic the Hedgehog title. Taking place after the events of Sonic Adventure 2, Sonic Heroes set itself apart from other Sonic games by pairing its playable characters into teams of three, with the player able to switch between each member of the group to get past certain obstacles or take down enemies. Each of these four playable teams had its own goals and storylines, which were all connected to a new threat from the nefarious Dr. Eggman and Neo Metal Sonic.

Rumors of a Sonic Heroes remake or sequel have popped up over the past year or so, with the latest coming from Twitter user sonicas0. The fan recently shared a leaked timetable of future Sonic the Hedgehog mobile games, as well as a rumor about a project supposedly titled “SHR.” The user accompanied this with an image of the Sonic Heroes logo and stated that this mystery project has been in development since 2023 with the goal of releasing it sometime in Fall 2025.

Sega Might Be Bringing Back Sonic Heroes

Right now, it isn’t clear if “SHR” is supposed to be a remaster of the original Sonic Heroes in a similar vein to the upcoming Sonic X Shadow Generations or a completely new title, assuming that sonicas0’s leak is indeed accurate. Earlier this year, word started to spread that Sega had a Sonic Heroes remake in the works, and it seems like this latest claim is adding even more evidence to the claim that the Sonic Heroes formula is making a comeback soon.

A Sonic Heroes follow-up could build on the original by introducing new teams comprised of characters that were introduced to the Sonic the Hedgehog series after 2003, such as Silver the Hedgehog, Blaze the Cat, and even characters from the IDW-published Sonic comics like Tangle the Lemur and Surge the Tenrec. Nothing has been officially confirmed by Sega or Sonic Team at this time, but if the rumors are true, Sonic fans could see the return of Sonic Heroes sometime next fall.
