NetherRealm Studios, the developer of the most recent Mortal Kombat games, has seemingly started working on the story mode for its next project. The last game released by NetherRealm Studios, Mortal Kombat 1, is set to receive a major update that will add a host of new content to the game.
A subsidiary of Warner Bros. Games, NetherRealm Studios is a Chicago-based developer that is known for its various fighting games. The company's latest title, a reboot of the original Mortal Kombat, was launched last September, providing fans of the series with a fresh story set in a new timeline. While NetherRealm Studios has yet to publicly announce any upcoming projects, recently spotted job listings indicate what the company is currently up to.
Rumor: NetherRealm Studios Considering a Mortal Kombat Action-Adventure Spin-Off
According to a new rumor, NetherRealm Studios possibly has an action-adventure spin-off game for the Mortal Kombat franchise in the works.
According to Warner Bros. Games job listings first reported by users at the eXputer forum, NetherRealm Studios is looking for a Senior Cinematics Animator who will be tasked with, among other things, producing high-quality cinematic animation for a story mode campaign. The company also wants to hire an Associate Producer who will handle the day-to-day management of an unnamed AAA title that is being developed. These job listings come after NetherRealm Studios laid off at least 50 employees in July, including everyone in the developer's mobile team.
What's Next for NetherRealm Studios?
NetherRealm Studios' unidentified AAA project could be another Mortal Kombat entry, although it should be noted that the developer previously said that it hoped to support the series' latest entry for years. It is also possible for the undisclosed game to be an original property or be part of another popular NetherRealm Studios franchise, such as the DC Comics universe-based Injustice. The series’ last entry, Injustice 2, which is considered by some to be one of the best fighting games for beginners, came out in 2017.
A new paid story DLC for Mortal Kombat 1 titled Khaos Reigns is scheduled to drop on September 24. In addition to expanding on the game's narrative, this $49.99 DLC will provide players with six new playable fighters, including crossover characters Conan the Barbarian, the Scream franchise's Ghostface, and the T-1000 from Terminator 2.
Prior to its July layoffs, NetherRealm Studios also released mobile games like WWE Immortals and the soon-to-shut-down Mortal Kombat: Onslaught, the latter of which became available on Android and iOS just last October. Around 11,700 people in the video game industry have been laid off in 2024, according to a publicly available record maintained by journalist Mike Straw.
