Mass Effect, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, and Baldur’s Gate 3 are all impressive and huge RPGs with plenty of dialogue choices. With so many story choices, players know they have the opportunity to write the narrative as they see fit, which can perhaps lead to different endings.

There will be no need to spoil anything major beyond the fact that there are multiple endings to these games.
Final Fantasy 6
An Ending For All
Final Fantasy 6
- Released
- October 11, 1994
Let’s start with a classic turn-based example, Final Fantasy 6, which is devoid of meaningful choices throughout the game. There are different orders to events that players can choose to do, but that’s about it. The big ending split will depend on how many party members players rescue and recruit in the second half of the game.
If players obtain everyone, they will get to see little epilogues for their party members. If they are missing some party members, they will not be included in the ending montage, which is quite lengthy if players find everyone. There aren’t many Final Fantasy games with branching endings, making Final Fantasy 6 special.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33
Fact Or Fiction?
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33
- Released
- April 24, 2025
- ESRB
- Mature 17+ / Blood and Gore, Strong Language, Suggestive Themes, Violence
- Genre(s)
- Turn-Based RPG, JRPG, Fantasy
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is a more modern turn-based example that offers some choices in the game, such as who players want to romance, limited to a select pool. This will not affect the story in any way, so the big decision will come right after the final battle.
Two party members will become opposed to each other, and players will have to choose who to side with in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. Which ending is the canon one has the fanbase split, which is a good thing, as it can create a positive discourse. If the next game is a direct sequel, Sandfall Interactive will have to make the choice for players.

Parasite Eve
- Released
- September 9, 1998
- ESRB
- M For Mature 17+ due to Animated Violence, Mature Sexual Themes

Parasite Eve, a turn-based and action hybrid, features one ending that is literally explosive, concluding with detective Aya Brea seemingly resolving the crisis in New York City. Players can then restart the game and retain equipment, along with getting a key to the Chrysler Building, which is now an optional dungeon.
There are 77 floors, most of which are randomized between layouts and monsters, making it one heck of a climb without many opportunities to rest. On the top floor, players can fight a boss, which will lead to a new ending with a very story-heavy character that opens up the plot in wild ways.

For example, there are certain points in the story where if players die, they won’t just get a Game Over screen.
The 10 Darkest Endings In Sci-Fi Video Game History, Ranked
The word "dark" doesn't even begin to describe the bleak endings in these sci-fi games.
Instead, they could get an ending that will force players to restart the whole thing. Another example could include killing certain NPCs when they shouldn’t. Nier: Automata is already a lengthy game, but if players really want to see it all, these endings should keep them occupied.
Chrono Trigger
When To Defeat Lavos
Chrono Trigger
- Released
- March 11, 1995
- ESRB
- T for Teen: Fantasy Violence, Mild Blood
- Genre(s)
- RPG
Chrono Trigger is a turn-based RPG involving time travel, with the main villain being a giant space alien named Lavos. Even though the possibility of time travel is present, it may not occur to players that they can disrupt the flow of time to end it early. After players beat the game the first time, and they get to carry over most progress, this should become clearer.
Different portals will become available, and players can challenge Lavos at different points, which will change the ending in big ways. Some paths will be harder than others, depending on which characters players can take into battle, including one where Crono has to face Lavos alone.
Undertale
Passive, Killer, Or In The Middle
Undertale
- Released
- September 15, 2015
Undertale is another turn-based and action hybrid, involving choices through the battle system. To get two of the best endings, players need to commit to either sparing every monster they encounter or killing every monster they encounter.
The pacifist route is considered to be the main ending, but if players decide to be a bit more uneven in their decisions, sparing some monsters over others, they can get neutral endings, which aren’t as narratively satisfying, but they can be funny. Like the Silent Hill series, Undertale does have a dog ending, for example.
Shin Megami Tensei 4
Make Your Own Path In The Apocalypse
Shin Megami Tensei IV
- Released
- July 16, 2013
Shin Megami Tensei 4, a turn-based RPG, is an example wherein players actually will make dialogue choices in the game, which will fall under Neutral, Law, and Chaotic categories. That said, these choices will not give players any clues that they can lead players into alternate endings, even though some actions may be more obvious than others.
10 PlayStation Games With Perfect Endings
Whether they wrap up a franchise or just have an exciting twist, these PlayStation finales are as good as it gets.
What players say will be added up, along with near-end choices, to lead players into Neutral, Law, and Chaotic end paths. This will determine which players will side with between the angels, demons, or humans, with the Neutral ending being one of the most challenging to achieve.

Forspoken is an action RPG that is about a woman, Frey, getting sucked into a mystical world akin to an Isekai anime like Inuyasha or The Devil is a Part-Timer.
This is another game where there aren’t a good number of choices beyond deciding whether or not to help people and take on quests. In the end, players will have to decide if they want to stay in this fantasy land or go home. The choice is not as cut and dry as that, but players will know what they are signing up for based on context clues.
Final Fantasy 10-2
From All Angles
Final Fantasy X-2
- Released
- November 18, 2003
Final Fantasy 10-2, a turn-based RPG, is another Final Fantasy game with different endings, and it is a direct sequel to the previous game. There is a tree ending, or at least one that sets about to answer if Tidus is still alive or not, which is what the central plot is about.
In the game, players will decide to side with one of three factions: the Youth League, the New Yevon Party, and the Machine Faction. There is a percentage meter for completion, and to reach 100%, players will need to complete side activities and replay the game to max everything out, which can be lengthy, but the Job system at least keeps things interesting.
