Roblox is discontinuing direct messages on October 7. While the move will inhibit the ability to communicate with other Roblox players, it will not eliminate it, and fans should still be able to browse their old messages following the change.
Direct or private messages have been part of the hit sandbox game since its early days, having originally been added to Roblox around 2008. They can be initiated from the profile of a user that the player wants to message, or by typing "/w" followed by the recipient's username in the chat box.

Roblox Deprecating Private Messages on October 7
The direct message era of Roblox is now set to end, as the game's developers have recently decided to discontinue support for this functionality. The feature will be deprecated on Monday, October 7, according to an in-game notification that recently started appearing under the Messages tab. Following this discontinuation, the only way to communicate with other players from the game itself will be via the so-called "in-experience" chat, which isn't going anywhere.
The social media reactions to this upcoming change are relatively mixed. Some Roblox players appear to be disappointed with private messages being discontinued, labeling them as a useful feature that they have used fairly often over the years. But not everyone is in agreement with that sentiment, as quite a few players have claimed that they can't even remember the last time they sent someone a private message, implying that they are indifferent about the end of direct messaging. One fan went as far as to equate Roblox private messages to someone sending emails instead of using a messaging app in 2024, concluding that the feature will not be missed.
Moreover, a vocal section of the fandom has openly welcomed the change, arguing that private messages were being abused by Roblox scammers. Between the so-called "trust trade" initiators, impersonators, and fake trade scammers, there is no shortage of malicious parties who have long been using direct messages to try to trick others.
Roblox Corporation has so far given no indication that it plans to fully remove all traces of private messaging from the game. Instead, this upcoming change will seemingly only prevent players from sending new direct messages, meaning they should still be able to continue browsing through their inboxes.
