A longtime Roblox fan was shocked recently to discover that a message they sent to one of the game community's most important and enigmatic figures 14 years ago was not only read, but responded to. Roblox co-founder and CEO David Baszucki, better known to some by his in-game persona, builderman, was a lot of early players' first friend when joining the platform, but he doesn't always make his presence known.
Baszucki currently has an administrator profile under the Roblox display name david.baszucki, but the builderman persona was his original account. Back in the days before Roblox had implemented a follower system, builderman was automatically added to new accounts as a friend, and prior to 2021, all new players would receive an automated message from him, welcoming them in and giving them helpful advice for starting out. But while builderman's painted-on plastic smile may have been a friendly and welcome sight to new players, his profile was rarely active.
That inactivity by the co-founder of the platform that lets players build their own games prompted Roblox user cynicalroxy11 to send a tongue-in-cheek message to builderman, simply asking, "come on when are you going to log on?" That message was sent on January 22, 2010, and then apparently promptly forgotten about by the user. But as revealed by the player recently on Reddit, and unknown to them for more than 14 years, builderman sent a response one hour and eight minutes later, stating, "I can answer questions without being logged in. Is there something I can help you with?"

There is some speculation about whether Baszucki actually responded to the player's query personally. At least one commenter in the Reddit thread has questioned its validity, noting that messages sent to that account are now handled by the customer support staff and not sent directly to the game platform's CEO. However, in early 2010, Roblox hadn't yet grown into one of the most popular game platforms in the world , having debuted less than four years prior, so it is entirely possible that the co-founder endearingly reached out to the player to offer a helping hand. One commenter was enamored with the matter-of-factness of the response, stating "you know it was a real person writing that, and that they cared about helping you out."
Roblox has indeed come a long way since its fledgling days, expanding its player base exponentially and branching out into other reams of media like offering online concerts by Bebe Rexha, Imagine Dragons, and other top modern music artists. Still, for those who were around in the early days, the nostalgia of seeing builderman pop up unexpectedly may bring a smile to their faces.
