You'll know if an NPC likes an item if there's a heart icon on an item on the gifts screen. The Knot of Destiny consumable item serves as a gift that's universally liked by all characters. You can give it to anyone and they'd still appreciate it!
To find an NPC's location, view their page in the Bond Menu and look for the Relevant Information section. If the NPC you selected is available in your current chapter, their location will be displayed there. If not, you'll need to change regions.
Where to Get Gifts in Rise of the Ronin
You can get gifts in a variety of ways. Most traders have gifts to sell, but since they can run out of stock, your next best bet is to find wandering traders. You'll occasionally run into one while traveling along roads, and you might find some peddling their wares in towns, villages, and even crossroads.
Additionally, you may run into some black market merchants when you restore Public Order to a zone or when you step out of your Longhouse. They'll also sell gifts from time to time.
Lastly, make sure to send Pilgrim Dogs on trips to shrines. The more money you give, the better the returns you'll receive, and they may even give you Silver Coins too. You can also check in with the Cat Concierge to get some passive rewards from the cats you find in the world.
