With 2026 already set to be a big year for horror gaming fans, many are looking to start the year off with the premiere of the newest Silent Hill film adaptation, Return to Silent Hill, which has just shared an exclusive trailer with The Best War Games that shows off James Sunderland getting his iconic radio, setting the tone for what fans can expect from the movie. Return to Silent Hill is slated to release in theaters in the United States on January 23, and both newcomers and veteran fans are champing at the bit for another deep dive into the mystifying, psychological world of the iconic Silent Hill survival horror series.

The Silent Hill video game series first debuted in 1999 on the original PlayStation and has since gone on to become one of the most beloved horror franchises of all time, ranking among other legendary hits like Resident Evil, Fatal Frame, and more. Despite its popularity among gaming fans, Silent Hill has struggled to make a splash on the silver screen. The first Silent Hill live-action film adaptation, released in 2006, was met with fairly positive reviews, but the 2012 sequel, Silent Hill: Revelation, was broadly panned for its overreliance on CGI and confusing story that retconned a number of cannon details from Silent Hill 3, the game it was based on. Hoping to revitalize cinematic interest in the series, Return to Silent Hill is already including a number of crucial in-game details, and may be one of the more accurate video game film adaptations to date.

Robert Strange, the actor playing Pyramid Head in the upcoming Return to Silent Hill, has teased some “cool tweaks” to his character in the new film.

Newest Return to Silent Hill Trailer Shows James Sunderland's Radio

Directed by Christophe Gans, Return to Silent Hill follows the story of Silent Hill 2, which sees James Sunderland attempting to find and reconnect with his believed-to-be-deceased wife, Mary. Early trailers and teasers for Return to Silent Hill have included looks at the new design for the terrifying Pyramid Head, along with sneak peeks at other iconic enemies like the Bubble Head Nurses. In the latest exclusive trailer shared with The Best War Games, Return to Silent Hill shows James Sunderland picking up his iconic static-riddled radio, marking a key detail that gaming fans will immediately appreciate. Gans previously included references to in-game puzzles in the 2006 film adaptation, which blended storylines and characters from multiple entries in the franchise, and the scene of James getting his radio could be a sign that more game similarities will be coming in Return to Silent Hill.

While Gans has been critiqued for taking creative liberties with the lore and characters in Silent Hill, audiences have been excitedly looking forward to long-time Silent Hill composer Akira Yamaoka leading the sound design for Return to Silent Hill. Many of the positive reviews for Gans' first Silent Hill movie praised the eerie auditory atmosphere, which was frequently credited as accurately matching the overall feeling of the Silent Hill series, and it should come as no surprise that the inclusion of Yamaoka has once again sparked optimism for Gans' return to adapting the survival horror franchise.

Even with a select number of controversies surrounding Return to Silent Hill driving some skepticism among cinephiles and diehard fans, broader audiences and online communities remain hopeful that the modest success of the 2006 film, the promising presence of Yamaoka, and the incredible base story of Silent Hill 2 will combine to create a memorable experience that will help to draw in new fans to the franchise. The Silent Hill series saw a notable increase in players following the releases of the previous films, and it would not be unheard of for Return to Silent Hill to encourage general horror film audiences to pick up the recent remake of Silent Hill 2 or perhaps even take an interest in the franchise as a whole.
