Netflix is going all out to promote its much-awaited Resident Evil series releasing in July. A day after the first official trailer for the series was released, the streaming service has shared a second teaser trailer that introduces the Joy pill produced by the Umbrella Corporation. In this new take on Raccoon City and its residents, things seem to be going downhill pretty quickly.
It was already known that Netflix would be taking creative liberties with the extremely popular Resident Evil franchise, and this is apparent in the latest teaser trailer. Lance Reddick's Albert Wesker is in charge of the production of the Joy pill, catered towards people with mental illnesses. However, he is aware of the pill’s harmful effects, and yet the corporation is unfazed. Only time will tell how bad the consequences of mass-producing such a pill will be, but the trailer hints at large-scale destruction.
The Resident Evil trailer begins with a fuzzy animated mascot for the Joy pill, with an unusually happy background score. Wesker introduces the pill as “an antidepressant that cures OCD, lowers anxiety, and increases focus.” There is just one caveat, the “drug contains the T-virus.” Anyone who has been keeping track of the Resident Evil franchise, whether games or movies, is aware of how deadly that virus can be. Having it as an ingredient for a pill that will potentially be consumed by the masses is a recipe for disaster.
The rest of the teaser trailer then goes on to offer first glimpses at some of the monsters that will be making an appearance in the Resident Evil series. Ella Balinska's Jade is seen fighting some recognizable creatures, including mutated dogs and lickers. Towards the end of the trailer, a Gulp Worm also shows up, and seems to be one of the biggest threats that the survivors will have to fight. Its appearance is also a hint at connections to the Resident Evil games. Similar to the first trailer for the Resident Evil series, the new video promises a lot of action, gunfire, explosions, and gore.
Paola Nuñez's previously undisclosed character makes her first appearance in the latest teaser trailer for the live-action Resident Evil series as well. She seems to be at a position of power at the Umbrella Corporation and refers to the T-virus as just an ingredient on the “warning label” for the Joy pill. There’s always someone in charge at the corporation who seems disinterested in all the warning signs, and causes a mass-scale apocalypse.
Resident Evil premieres on Netflix on July 14, 2022.
