At the most recent Capcom Spotlight conference, the developers spent a good chunk of time focusing on one of the hottest anticipated games coming out in 2026, Resident Evil Requiem. Though it's clear Capcom is still remaining pretty tight-lipped about many of the details, mechanics and systems that have been baked into the game, in order to get people hyped, they did still have some pretty interesting reveals, not only in terms of how the game will play, but also the development process as a whole.

With a brand new protagonist and a very familiar setting, Resident Evil Requiem is shaping up to be one of the most unique entries in the entire series, so it's understandable why fans are desperate to learn any new information that they can. 5 Third And First Person

Players Can Now Choose Their Preferred Camera Angle

Capcom has been flipping between first and third-person camera angles in the last few Resident Evil games, but for Requiem, they'll be giving players the ability to choose this for themselves. The way that the developers explain it is that the first-person view is going to make the game much more immersive and scary, considering there is much less to actually see, while third-person can amplify the action and overall intensity by granting players a better view of the monsters that surround them.

This is a clever way to improve the accessibility of the game, since classic fans can enjoy a more traditional over-the-shoulder view, while newcomers who jumped in with Resident Evil 7 and Village can feel right at home with first-person. Being able to switch between the two on the fly is also going to help out the replay value, considering that both offer very different experiences, which will incentivize a second playthrough.

Since the Resident Evil franchise made the move over to the RE engine with the seventh game, these titles have looked absolutely jaw-dropping from a visual perspective, but it seems that the developers are going one step further with Requiem. With Grace, for example, they even went as far as to focus on small things, like the redness in her face or the sweat dripping down her forehead in intense situations. In fact, they even called in a professional wig maker who they would rely on to help them out with the hair physics, so there's no doubt this will end up being the best-looking Resident Evil game ever made, considering how much time and effort have been dedicated to the visual presentation.

3 Major Themes

A Eulogy For Those Who Were Lost In Raccoon City

During the presentation, Capcom ensured fans that they weren't returning to Raccoon City just for the sake of nostalgia or fanservice. Instead, they explained that the core of the entire franchise, and ultimately the event that has led to many future events in the lore, was the Raccoon City incident, so it only felt right to return to this iconic location once again for the newest entry.

More specifically, though, they mentioned that the main theme running throughout the game is, unsurprisingly, requiem, and the idea of avenging and remembering those who didn't make it out of the outbreak with their lives intact. At the same time, they also specifically mentioned that multiple characters who are still alive, such as Leon, Clare, and Jill, are all deeply connected to what happened in Raccoon City all those years ago, which seems like a subtle hint that they may show up in one form or another.

2 Offline Single Player

While it may seem a little random for Capcom to openly confirm that the game is offline single-player, there is a reason why they decided to clarify this. Resident Evil 5 and 6 both featured co-op, which, in many ways, was the main draw of those two entries, so while the recent titles have been single-player, there are so many long-time fans who still recognize it as being a co-op experience.

However, this won't be the case for Requiem, which is going to be a fully-fledged single-player game with Grace being forced to venture across the deserted Raccoon City on her own. This will go a long way in ramping up the intensity and immersion of the gameplay, since players won't have an ally to fall back on any time they run out of bullets or herbs.

1 Leon's Too Experienced For Horror

Capcom Made A Quick Mention Of The Fan Favorite Protagonist

Leon may not have made an on-screen appearance during the Capcom Spotlight, but he did receive a pretty bizarre mention, which reveals how difficult it has been for the developers to fit him into the modern series. When discussing the new protagonist, Grace, the developers quickly mentioned that, while the intent was to originally base the game around Leon, this proved very difficult because of how experienced he is as a survivor.

The developers claimed that it just wouldn't be all that fun to play as a guy who has literally been through hell and back multiple times, since it's going to take a lot for him to get even remotely scared. Considering the last time Leon made a mainline appearance was Resident Evil 6, he's been out of the picture for many years, so it's fascinating to see how Capcom is approaching his character behind the scenes, and how he was seemingly once the leading star of Resident Evil Requiem before Grace came along.
