2021 marks the 25th anniversary of Capcom's Resident Evil franchise, the series that popularized the survival-horror genre and has remained incredibly popular to this day. Capcom has been celebrating Resident Evil's 25th anniversary throughout the year with the release of Resident Evil Village, and it's now kicking up the festivities for the spooky season by making Resident Evil-related announcements throughout the month of October.
So far, these announcements have been pretty low-key, and it's possible the rest of them will be similar in scope. However, it's also possible that these announcements will include something important for Resident Evil fans, and so they should be sure to pay attention regardless.
Whether or not the Resident Evil Halloween announcements have anything important to reveal remains to be seen, but here's what's been shown so far and what the rumors are pointing towards.
Resident Evil Halloween Announcements So Far
- Resident Evil 25th Anniversary Halloween Giveaway
- Resident Evil 4 VR
Capcom's calendar starts with the reveal of a Halloween giveaway for the Resident Evil 25th anniversary celebrations. Gamers can win some exclusive prizes, like an Oculus Quest 2 headset, a Resident Evil Village sweatshirt, and more.
The calendar also reiterates the Resident Evil 4 VR release date, with the game set to launch on October 21 as an Oculus Quest 2 exclusive. Resident Evil 4 has come to numerous platforms in the past, but virtual reality should provide a legitimately new way to experience the classic survival-horror game. How well Leon's adventure translates to VR remains to be seen, but fans will find out sooner rather than later.
In the meantime, Capcom has teased three other reveals for October 21, all labeled "Schedule," then two more reveals for October 22 with the same level. On October 25, Capcom has labeled its announcement as "Appointment" with a "Schedule" reveal for October 29. What exactly this means is unclear, but it's possible that Capcom has something big up its sleeve when it comes to the Resident Evil franchise.
Rumors have persisted that a Resident Evil Switch exclusive game is in active development, with some reputable leakers expecting it to come at any point. The Capcom ransomware attack has backed up the existence of this game, known by the codename Resident Evil: Outrage, and leakers have helped fill in the blanks as to what fans may be able to expect from it. According to the leaked information, the Resident Evil Switch game takes place at a college and will feature Rebecca Chambers and Chris Redfield as the primary playable characters.
Capcom has not officially announced the rumored Resident Evil Switch game at the time of this writing, though, so fans should take the information with a massive grain of salt. It's entirely possible that the leakers have their information incorrect or that plans for the game have changed. There's also no guarantee that these Halloween reveals will include anything as substantial as a new video game announcement, so fans should keep their expectations in check.
Even so, it wouldn't hurt for Resident Evil enthusiasts to keep their eye on the Halloween reveals for the rest of the month, just in case.
