The Resident Evil series has been around for decades, spawning multiple games, both mainline and spin-off. While story and character development has never been a major focus point in the franchise, many characters have become iconic and beloved.
Due to the extensiveness of the games, there is a vast number of playable characters throughout the franchise. Even within the bracket of what would be considered as major playable characters, all have different fates after their time in their respective games. Some have more information on what happens to them, while others' stories are left open-ended.
Resident Evil: 12 Most Iconic Lines From The Franchise
Resident Evil features some of the greatest lines from video games. These examples are the most iconic.
14 Rosemary Winters
Joins Chris' Operation
Resident Evil Village
- Released
- May 7, 2021
- Developer(s)
- Capcom
- Platform(s)
- PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, PlayStation VR2, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PC, iOS
Rose is the most recent playable DLC character, but more importantly, she is the driving figure behind the story of Resident Evil Village. Having been abducted, her father, Ethan Winters, rescues her. Later, Rose starred in her own DLC, with some people wanting her in a standalone game.
In the DLC, Rose accepts Chris Redfield's offer to be a part of his operation at the Bioterroism Security Assessment Alliance. With her powers, she is a valuable asset. Maybe in fifteen years, when the DLC canonically takes place, Rose might return to the Resident Evil series.
13 Jake Muller
Starts A New Life Fighting Bioweapons
Resident Evil 6
The closest to an antagonist the Resident Evil series got was Albert Wesker. Of course, his son also had a prominent role in the franchise. Jake Muller was introduced in his own campaign along with Sherry Birkin in RE6.
Resident Evil: All Forms Of Albert Wesker, Ranked
Unsurprisingly, Albert Wesker has featured prominently throughout the Resident Evil franchise. Here's every version, ranked.
Working as a mercenary, Jake was vital to RE6, as his blood was able to create a vaccine for the C-Virus. After the events of the game, he donated his blood. He then began fighting bio-organic weapons in other countries, still as a mercenary.
12 Helena Harper
Absolved Of Her Crimes
- First Appearance: Resident Evil 6
Resident Evil 6 didn't receive high praise when it was released. This could be a factor in the lack of information regarding Helena's whereabouts after the game.
In RE6, she appeared as a joint character alongside Leon S. Kennedy as a United States Secret Service member. Framed for the murder of the American President by Derek C. Simmons, Helena's journey was mainly targeted at him in revenge for her sister. After the events of the game, Helena was absolved of criminal wrongdoings and was allowed to join the team once more.
11 Piers Nivans
Sacrificed Himself To Save Chris
- First Appearance: Resident Evil 6
Piers only appeared in Resident Evil 6 as a result of what happened to him. He is available as the partner character in Chris Redfield's campaign in RE6.
After nearly dying, he infected himself with the C-Virus, enabling him to stay alive to kill a bioweapon. He stayed behind while he still possessed sentience, which allowed Chris to escape in an escape pod. Despite his story ending shortly, the ripples Piers left can still be seen in later games. Chris stays in the BSAA and becomes more jaded after seeing his partner die.
10 Sherry Birkin
Fights Bioterrorism After Her Experiences
Resident Evil 2
- Released
- January 21, 1998
- Developer(s)
- Capcom
- Platform(s)
- Sega Dreamcast, Nintendo 64, Nintendo GameCube, PC, PS1
Sherry has one of the wildest backstories in Resident Evil. Introduced in RE2, she survived the Raccoon City Incident as a child. She was infected by a G-Virus embryo, with her parents being responsible for the horrors she went through. Years later, she became a Division of Security Operations agent, and was involved in the events of RE6. Thanks to her involvement with Jake Muller, the C-Virus outbreak was contained.
There isn't much information to go on compared to some of the better-known characters in the Resident Evil universe. However, most assume that Sherry continues to work for the DSO.
9 Sheva Alomar
Returns To Working For The BSAA
Resident Evil 5
- Released
- March 5, 2009
- Developer(s)
- Capcom
- Platform(s)
- Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One
Resident Evil 5 didn't garner as much praise as its predecessors did. As a result, Sheva hasn't appeared much after the events in Africa.
Introduced as a member of the West African division of the BSAA, Sheva returned to working as a part of the organization. A few years after the events of RE5, Sheva expressed worries at Chris Redfield's disappearance to Piers Nivans. With RE5 next in line for the remake treatment, maybe players will get to see Sheva again, especially since the Separate Ways DLC can bridge the gap between games.
8 Billy Coen
Presumably Started A New Life
Resident Evil 0
Resident Evil isn't the happiest series. Characters that haven't been seen for a while are most likely living a normal life. Such is the case with Billy, who appeared for the first and last time in RE0 as a joint playable character alongside Rebecca Chambers.
Framed for murder before the events of RE0, Rebecca finds out that Billy is innocent. They say goodbye at the end of the game, with Rebecca reporting that Billy has died, with his whereabouts currently unknown. However, since the destruction of Raccoon City, all documents of Billy are most likely destroyed, leaving him free.
7 Rebecca Chambers
Fighting Bioterrorism With Brains
Resident Evil
- Released
- March 22, 1996
- Developer(s)
- Capcom
- Platform(s)
- PlayStation (Original), Sega Saturn, Nintendo DS, PC
Rebecca was introduced in the first Resident Evil and became a playable character in RE0. She was one of the youngest characters featured, being only eighteen while killing bioweapons.
Despite being well-liked, Rebecca has mostly remained in the background of Resident Evil. However, she was still a valuable asset to the BSAA. She also held roles at various universities, thanks to her smarts. Regardless of her time spent behind the scenes working the scientific route, she's still capable of holding her own against zombies and other monsters.
6 Ada Wong
A Mysterious Character With A Mysterious Fate
- First Appearance: Resident Evil 2
Ada hasn't had a definitive game where she plays the central role as a protagonist, except for Resident Evil 4's Separate Ways DLC. However, she has made multiple appearances throughout the Resident Evil series as a playable character. She usually appears where Leon S. Kennedy is, as a mysterious spy with a hidden agenda.
Fighting against any bioweapons that get in her way, she was employed by a rival company to Umbrella, and later, Albert Wesker. In her last chronological appearance in RE6, she accepted a new job, leaving her fate ambiguous.
5 Claire Redfield
Fighting Bioterrorism Runs In The Family
Resident Evil 2
- Released
- January 25, 2019
- Developer(s)
- Capcom
- Platform(s)
- PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S
Despite being a very popular Resident Evil character, Claire has only appeared in a few mainline games; RE2 and RE: Code Veronica. The sister of Chris Redfield, Claire has also devoted her life to stopping bioterrorism.
After the events of RE2, Claire appeared in Code Veronica. In the following years, she would become a member of TerraSave, helping those who were affected by bioterrorism. However, being a Redfield, she would still battle any bioweapons that got in her way.
