Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami may be taking a break from the survival horror genre. Mikami first made a name for himself at Capcom, serving as director for the original Resident Evil and its 2002 remake, as well as Resident Evil 4. He was also the producer for Resident Evil 2 and 3, and worked on a laundry list of other beloved titles like Devil May Cry, Viewtiful Joe, and Godhand before leaving to found Platinum Games in 2007. After releasing the cult-classic Vanquished in 2010, Mikami founded Tango Gameworks, where he directed the 2014 horror title The Evil Within.
Recently, Mikami reunited with Goichi “Suda51” Suda to promote Shadows of the Damned: Hella Remastered, an updated re-release of the 2011 action/horror title the pair made together. In the game, players control a demon hunter named Garcia Hotspur as he storms the underworld to rescue his girlfriend from the Lord of Demons. Earlier this month, Mikami and Suda shared some ideas about what they would like to work on next, with one possibility being either a Killer7 remaster or a sequel.
Original Resident Evil 2 is Making a Comeback Soon
Following in the footsteps of RE1, the original Resident Evil 2 will be making a comeback sooner rather than later.
Whatever project Shinji Mikami starts next might not be in the survival horror genre, something for which he is well known. While speaking to PCGamesN at last week’s Gamescom 2024 event alongside Suda51, Mikami stated that he would like to take a break from survival horror, though he remained tight-lipped about what he would like to do instead. Suda was more talkative about his next dream projects, saying that he would like to remaster some of Grasshopper Manufacture’s lesser-known titles like Flower, Sun, and Rain and Michigan: Report from Hell.
Resident Evil’s Shinji Mikami Might Be Taking A Break From Survival Horror
Shinji Mikami’s latest comments come as fans speculate on when the next mainline Resident Evil game will be announced. It was initially rumored that Resident Evil 9 would be released in January, but more recent accounts have stated that it may come in late 2025 or 2026. Not much is known about Resident Evil 9’s plot or gameplay, but some sources claim that it will feature an open world.
There were also rumors of a modern remake of the original Resident Evil, but insiders later stated that such a project isn’t in development in any capacity. As for the director who first brought the zombie-filled franchise to life, Shinji Mikami’s next game may not be in the survival horror genre he helped popularize with Resident Evil, though fans are still excited about the creator's next work regardless.
Resident Evil is a long-running survival horror franchise developed by Capcom. Spread across numerous mainline and spin-off entries, the series is known for it’s third and first-person action horror, zombie-related monsters and references, and challenging puzzles.
