According to a reputable Resident Evil insider, Resident Evil 9 was originally going to be an open-world multiplayer game starring Leon S. Kennedy and Jill Valentine, but those plans were ultimately scrapped. Resident Evil 9 has yet to be officially announced by Capcom, but since Resident Evil is one of the company's most popular franchises, it's only a matter of time before it's revealed.
While Resident Evil fans wait for official word from Capcom on Resident Evil 9, all kinds of rumors have been swirling about the game and what it will entail. Some of the more recent rumors have claimed that Resident Evil 9's protagonists will be Leon and Jill, but those rumors have been pushed back against. Now it seems the Leon/Jill duo plan was for a scrapped version of RE9 that was going to be set on a fictional island inspired by Singapore, though Leon is apparently still on deck for the new game.
Resident Evil 9 Character Wish List
There have been plenty of rumors about which characters will be in RE9, and iconic franchise names would be exciting to see again.
This is according to information from AestheticGamer/Dusk Golem, known for accurately leaking Resident Evil information. Addressing the Resident Evil 9 rumors that have been floating around, they said that the original version of Resident Evil 9 was "trying to be the opposite" of Resident Evil 7 after the latter underperformed at launch. However, Resident Evil 7 sales picked up significantly as the years went on, with it becoming one of the best-selling games in franchise history. This seemingly led to a change in Resident Evil 9's direction. AestheticGamer doesn't want to leak anything substantial about Resident Evil 9, but did confirm that fan-favorite character Leon S. Kennedy is still the main character of the new game.
Resident Evil 9 Will Apparently Star Leon S. Kennedy
Previously, AestheticGamer teased that Resident Evil 9 would be a big reinvention of the series, ala Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil 7. With Resident Evil 7's sales so strong in the long run, it seems Capcom doesn't feel like it needs to chase trends with the series, though rumors have persisted that the new game is still going to be open world. Whether that's the case or not remains to be seen.
Ultimately, Resident Evil fans will want to take anything claimed about the game with a grain of salt until Capcom decides to make an announcement itself. Capcom has released some kind of new Resident Evil project every single year since the Resident Evil 2 remake released in 2019, and so chances are the Resident Evil 9 reveal will happen at some point later this year. With big events like Summer Game Fest right around the corner, here's hoping franchise fans get to see the new game sooner rather than later.
