Summary

  • Resident Evil 7 is struggling on iOS with less than 2,000 sales since July 2 release.
  • Audience interest is lacking for ported console games on Apple devices.
  • Despite positive reviews, Resident Evil 7 isn't selling well on iPhone 15.

Resident Evil 7 was released on iOS, iPad, and iMac earlier this month, but Capcom's 2017 survival horror is struggling to break even on the App Store, new statistics have revealed. According to a new report, estimated profits for the iOS edition of Resident Evil 7 are far below Capcom's expectations.

Mobile Gamer reported in June that many AAA titles have found it difficult to make the leap to iOS devices. The new iPhone 15 models can comfortably support high-quality graphics like Resident Evil 7, but there simply isn't enough interest from iOS users to justify porting the games to Apple devices. Many other console and PC games have tried and failed to find their feet on the App Store, including Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed Mirage.

What The Involvement of Resident Evil 7's Director Could Mean For RE9

It's confirmed that the next Resident Evil game is in development, with RE7's director at the helm, which could suggest a few things about the sequel.

As Mobile Gamer reports, the iOS port of Resident Evil 7 has only grossed $28,140, which excludes Apple's cut of the profits. Resident Evil 7 costs $19.99, but Mobile Gamer estimates less than 2,000 buyers since the port's launch on July 2. There are several reasons as to why Resident Evil 7 might be missing the mark on iOS devices, but the most probable is that audiences consider the port to be a downgrade from an HD television and a high-tech console like the PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X/S.

Resident Evil 7: Biohazard iOS Sales Are Missing the Mark So Far

  • A new report estimates less than 2,000 Resident Evil 7 sales since the port's release on July 2.

Although the sales for Resident Evil 7 might not be reflected as such, the reviews for the game are largely positive. In fact, several reviews praise Capcom for a triumphant port, noting that the game runs well on the iPhone 15 models. According to feedback, the port runs at 60pfs on iPhone Pro Max and even runs smoothly in prioritize performance graphics mode, giving it that crisp finish that made Resident Evil 7 such a stand-out from the franchise in the first place. Some criticisms pointed out that the text is too small to read, which can make subtitles a bit tricky, but other than that, the Resident Evil 7 port seems to be a resounding success thus far.

So it isn't necessarily the game itself that let Capcom down, but rather the lack of an audience for iOS games, especially ones that aren't free-to-play titles. Although Resident Evil ports don't seem to be striking the right chord with mobile gamers, that hasn't stopped Capcom from insisting that yet another title in the survival horror series be brought to iOS devices. As Capcom works on countless Resident Evil sequels, it also continues to prioritize iOS versions of the franchise's best games. Following Resident Evil 7 arriving on the App Store, Capcom has announced plans to bring the 2019 Resident Evil 2 remake to iOS, iPad, and iMac in the near future.
