It's a great time to be a Resident Evil fan. Back in July 2024, Resident Evil 9 was officially confirmed to be in development at Capcom, and while there's no release window just yet, it seems very likely fans will see something from the next installment soon enough. On top of a new mainline entry, a handful of Resident Evil remakes are also rumored to be in the works.

All the way back in December 2023, Capcom confirmed that more Resident Evil remakes are definitely on the cards, and in the year and a half since there have been countless rumors regarding which entry is up for the remake treatment next. Some sources have claimed Resident Evil 0 is getting a remake, some claim Resident Evil - Code: Veronica is getting its long-awaited second shot, and others suggest Resident Evil 5 is up next. Capcom hasn't announced anything just yet, but one of these potential remakes would be a particularly great fit for the Nintendo Switch 2's new features.

If the wind is blowing in the direction of Resident Evil going open-world, it can borrow a feature from the Silent Hill 2 Remake that would fit well.

A Resident Evil 5 Remake Would Be a Great Fit for the Nintendo Switch 2

The Switch 2's GameChat Would Work Well with Resident Evil 5's Co-Op

One of Resident Evil 5's most defining features is its two-player co-op. In the original 2009 iteration of the game, two players could join forces as Chris Redfield and Sheva Alomar via local split-screen or online co-op. Though fans can play through Resident Evil 5 solo, it's widely regarded to be a vastly inferior experience, with the game's companion AI feeling outdated even all the way back in 2009.

If a Resident Evil 5 remake happens in the near future, it needs to keep the original's co-op, or else it would run the risk of losing a core part of the game's identity. And if co-op remains a key feature, a Resident Evil 5 remake could really shine on the Nintendo Switch 2.

Hearing the criticisms of the original Switch's lack of social features, the Nintendo Switch 2 is launching with a dedicated party system called "GameChat." This feature is quickly accessible via the new Joy-Cons' "C" button, which will let up to 12 players join a voice call. Voice communication is absolutely necessary for Resident Evil 5's co-op, so Switch 2's GameChat would be a big boon.

Additionally, the Nintendo Switch 2's ability to screen share could come in handy when co-op partners are trying to highlight specific points of interest like puzzle solutions or elements in the environment. Even the Nintendo Switch 2's new camera feature could be used to enhance a possible Resident Evil 5 remake, with players being able to see one another's reactions during intense or scary sequences.

The Nintendo Switch 2's GameShare feature would also be a big boon for a potential Resident Evil 5 remake, allowing two players for the price of one.

The Switch 2's Handheld Nature Would Suit RE5's Mission Structure

Resident Evil 5 has a more linear structure than most of its siblings, with it featuring a total of 16 missions, split into six chapters. This succinct structure would make a Resident Evil 5 remake the perfect handheld game, encouraging players to hop in for just one or two quick missions whenever they have a spare hour.
