The Resident Evil 4 remake had big shoes to fill. The original Resident Evil 4 from 2005 was a classic, completely reinventing not only the Resident Evil series but third-person shooters as a whole. Even with the quality of the previous remakes, there was a question of whether this title needed improving. Thankfully, it's turned out that the Resident Evil 4 remake is a faithful and fitting successor, building on almost everything that the original established. There is one glaring omission, however.

At the time of writing, the Resident Evil 4 remake lacks some of the game's most important post-game content: The arcade Mercenaries Mode and the Resident Evil 4: Separate Ways campaign, starring Ada Wong. The former is releasing on April 7th, but the latter has yet to be confirmed. Still, what should players who finished the game do in the meantime?

The Resident Evil titles have always been designed to be played multiple times, playing different characters at different difficulties. While Resident Evil 4 only has Leon, it still has several difficulty modes. Resident Evil 4's hardest challenge, Professional mode, only unlocks after completing the campaign once.

For those with more completionist goals, like completing all the merchant's requests or finding every collectible, Resident Evil 4 has a New Game Plus mode, which lets players start again with all their weapons, currency, crafting recipes, and other upgrades. This will make early areas easier and give the player more time to thoroughly explore the levels for missed details. There are Clockwork Castellans to shoot down, treasure to find and sell, and also shooting ranges to try and aim for the high score to get more tokens for unlocking Charms.

They should note that certain achievements and rewards can't be gained in New Game Plus.

Said Achievements are also a good way to extend playtime. Resident Evil 4's minimalist trophy, for example, tasks players with beating the game using nothing but the handgun and the knife. The frugalist trophy asks that they do so without using healing items. Players are bound to find even more esoteric self-imposed challenges to further up the difficulty.

Lastly, they can aim for the coveted S+ rank. This is one of Resident Evil 4's hardest challenges, asking players to beat the game as fast as possible under a fresh save without using New Game Plus. Assisted difficulty asks for under 4 hours, normal difficulty asks for under 5, hard difficulty asks for under 5 and a half, and professional asks for the same while using less than 15 saves.

The Resident Evil 4 remake is now available on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
