For those who want a change from playing as Leon Kennedy, a recent mod for the remake of Resident Evil 4 allows fans to step into the metaphorical shoes of one of the franchise's most iconic Tyrants, Nemesis. With Silent Hill 2 being remade by Bloober Team and hopefully coming out soon, not to mention the reimagining of Dead Space that launched earlier this year, horror gaming is in something of a golden age of bringing back classic entries in the genre.
One of the notable things about Capcom's ongoing franchise is the onslaught of formidable foes that have tested the player's mettle over the years. Resident Evil is known for its roster of powerful enemies, from the T-002 Tyrant variant as seen in the original 1996 game to the unforgettable matriarch Lady Dimitrescu from 2021's Village. Fans will have their favorites, of course, but there is one that often sticks out in some people's minds, and now it's possible to play as him in the RE4 remake.
On Nexus Mods, user Dimenarius has made it possible for Resident Evil 4 players to take on the role of Nemesis, specifically the version of him from the remake of RE3. The mod swaps out Leon Kennedy for the Tyrant's character model, allowing the adversary to become the hero of the story instead of the villain. However, the description doesn't say whether Dimenarius' mod keeps Leon's original dialog. It's obviously a little bit jarring to see this monster be the one to rescue Ashley Graham from the clutches of Lord Saddler, but the great thing about modding is it allows players to experience games in new and interesting ways.
Resident Evil 4 modders have been busy since the remake came out not long ago. There is already a slew of ways to tinker with the vanilla format on PC, whether it's extending the opening village sequence, replacing Leon with a more classic RE look, or improving the visuals and overall experience. It will be interesting to see whether anyone else inserts a different playable Tyrant into RE4.
It's no secret that Resident Evil has had a huge impact on horror gaming, influencing many other titles and studios that came after it, including Silent Hill. With the success of the recent remake, as well as a ninth installment said to be in development, things are continuing to look up for the series that helped define survival horror in the early days.
Resident Evil 4 is out now for PC, PS4, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
