Summary

  • Bosch: Legacy Season 3 will debut on Freevee in March 2025, and it'll be the final season, and will set up the Renee Ballard spin-off.
  • Ballard's crucial role in Bosch: Legacy's finale will set her up as the new face of the Bosch universe.
  • Ballard could be the long-term replacement for Bosch, but they'll still appear in future team-ups.

Bosch: Legacy season 3 will air on Prime Video offshoot, Freevee, in March 2025, and it'll be the final season of the popular crime drama. However, it won't be the end of the Bosch-verse, as Renee Ballard will be getting her own spin-off series, which will feature Titus Welliver in a recurring role as Harry Bosch. In light of the news that Bosch: Legacy is coming to an end, this makes Ballard's appearance in the finale of Bosch: Legacy even more important, as she'll essentially be taking over as the main character in the Bosch television universe.

It was initially thought that the Renee Ballard spin-off series would feature crossovers with Bosch: Legacy, with both shows continuing side by side, but sadly, this is not the plan. Bosch: Legacy season 3 and the Ballard spin-off will both be based on Michael Connelly's book, Desert Star, and it'll follow Maggie Q's Ballard as she sets up a cold case unit in the LAPD.

Renee Ballard will turn up sooner than expected in Bosch: Legacy season 3 to set up the storyline for her own spin-off series, which will air in late 2025. When it was revealed that Ballard would meet up with Harry Bosch in season 3, it hadn't been announced that it would be the final season of Bosch: Legacy. Ballard's upcoming appearance in Bosch: Legacy's finale is now even more important as it'll set her up as the new face of the television universe, with Bosch taking a back seat.

Ballard could be the long term replacement for Bosch, with Titus Welliver officially done playing the character in the lead role. If Ballard has the longevity of her investigative counterpart, Maggie Q could be playing her long after Harry Bosch officially retires. However, this is a long way off, as Bosch might join Ballard's cold case unit to help with numerous cases. Michael Connelly has written a string of books that feature Bosch and Ballard working together, so Titus Welliver is not even close to being finished with the iconic character.

Titus Welliver will appear in three episodes of the Renee Ballard spin-off's debut run, and if the show goes on for multiple seasons, it is likely Harry Bosch will continue to make guest appearances. Bosch and Ballard have appeared in five books together thus far, with the most recent one, The Waiting, set for release in November 2024. If Michael Connelly carries on including Harry Bosch in his books, Titus Welliver will probably keep playing him as long as possible in the television universe. Michael Connelly recently spoke about Titus Welliver's dedication to the character of Harry Bosch and teased the future of the Bosch-verse, in an official statement obtained by Deadline:

I am so proud of what we have accomplished with this show. Ten years ago, I asked Titus Welliver if he could stick with Harry Bosch for five seasons, and he said he could do it forever. Well, five became 10, and the character, thanks to Titus, will live forever in the hearts of viewers and in the streaming world as the detective who knows that everybody counts or nobody counts. The good news here is that we have not seen the last of Harry Bosch. As in the books, Bosch is part of the Renee Ballard world, and I can’t wait for the next chapter to open.

Harry Bosch is much older in the books than he currently is in the Bosch television universe, so that could suggest the private investigator has a lot more life left in him yet. Also, Harry Bosch could end up appearing in multiple shows, with the Jerry Edgar spin-off currently in the works, and the possibility of more Bosch: Legacy spin-offs in the future. The Jerry Edgar series will see Bosch's ex-partner go on an undercover investigation in Haiti. There's always a chance Bosch could turn up briefly in that spin-off series, especially as Jamie Hector has portrayed Edgar in guest appearances in Bosch: Legacy.
