When you first start out in Reigns: The Witcher, you'll only have one tale which tasks you with staying alive as long as possible. While this might sound straightforward in a game where there are monsters to slay and devious characters at large, Reigns: The Witcher puts a different spin on survival. If you're unsure how the system works or what you're supposed to do to three-star this tale, look no further. I'll explain how to survive longer in Reigns: The Witcher, so you can rack up high scores, unlock more tales, and push Geralt deeper into adventures than before.

How Reigns: The Witcher's Survival System Works

How long you manage to keep a run going depends on how well you can manage four different gauges found at the top of your screen. Each one represents Geralt's relationship with a different type of character, or how often he engages in combat/ monster hunting. Below, I've listed each symbol and what it corresponds to:

  • Person: Do humans look on Geralt favorably?
  • Upside Down Person: Do nonhumans look on Geralt favorably?
  • Star: Do sorcerers look on Geralt favorably?
  • Sword: How focused is Geralt on the Path to hunt monsters?

In other words, you can see the first three icon gauges as a popularity meter, while the last is how often Geralt engages in combat or takes on a fight against monsters.

To survive longer in Reigns: The Witcher, you need to make sure that each of these symbols doesn't get completely full or empty. The more you positively engage with one of these character types or in combat, the more the gauge will fill up. Be mean or rude to them, or refuse to fight monsters, and the gauges will deplete.

The problem is, some choices you make can fill or deplete multiple gauges at once, with some options filling one and depleting another. As such, you must always try to keep every gauge as close to the middle as possible, otherwise you risk inadvertently filling or emptying one when trying to balance another.

You'll also sometimes find that a choice you need to make to improve your star rating for a tale's objective will also impact one of the gauges you want to affect the least.

From my time playing the game so far, it does feel as though it's impossible to keep this going forever, and you will eventually meet an untimely demise. One tip I can give is that when you begin to see green and red numbers appearing above each icon (after a few runs), make sure you use these to determine which are going to keep your icons most balanced. If one of them is running particularly close to full or empty, any decision to lower it is likely your best option.

The type of death you get depends on which icon's gauge you fill or empty. Experiment with dying in different ways to unlock more options for future runs.
