Released all the way back in 2010, Red Dead Redemption is still widely considered to be one of the greatest action-adventure video games of all time, and for good reason. Putting players in the leather cowboy boots of John Marston, Red Dead Redemption tells the tale of a former gang member turned rancher who's forced to return to his gunslinging ways and hunt down his former friends in order to save his family. As well as a top-tier narrative, Red Dead Redemption features a vibrant open-world, a diverse cast of characters, and some excellent third-person shooting gameplay.
But while Red Dead Redemption still holds up fairly well 13 years after its release, it's certainly starting to feel its age in some places. For a good few years now, fans have been pleading with Rockstar to make a Red Dead Redemption remake, giving the first game a new visual overhaul, and refining some gameplay mechanics to make it feel a bit closer to the 2018 sequel. After years of waiting, fans might finally have their wish granted, as according to some recent rumors, a Red Dead Redemption remake could be well on the way.
The Red Dead Redemption Remake and Remaster Rumors Explained
Though rumors surrounding a supposed Red Dead Redemption remake or remaster have circulated in the gaming industry for a good few years now, things really started gaining traction last year. According to an insider named Tez2 in 2022, a remaster of Red Dead Redemption had been in the works at Rockstar for quite some time, but after the disastrous launch of the Grand Theft Auto Trilogy remasters in November 2021, it was apparently scrapped completely.
So, while this leak did supposedly confirm the existence of a Red Dead Redemption remaster, it simultaneously stated that it had been scrapped, leaving many fans desperate for more answers. Rockstar refused to comment on the leaks, but that doesn't seem to have stopped a few more from sprouting up more recently. The latest Red Dead Redemption remaster leak occurred just a week ago, when the Game Rating and Administration Committee of Korea posted a new rating on its website that seemingly confirmed the existence of an upcoming Red Dead Redemption remaster.
Simply titled Red Dead Redemption on the age-rating document, this listing also seemingly implies that the game would definitely be heading to consoles, as the classification number uses the term "NV," which is used by the board to refer to console games. This would seemingly then suggest that this Red Dead Redemption game is not just a long-awaited PC port of the first game, but some kind of new release for all platforms. The most logical conclusion is a Red Dead Redemption remaster or remake of some kind, potentially the one that the 2022 leak said had been scrapped. Rockstar may have just put the Red Dead remaster on pause after the GTA Trilogy's launch.
This last weekend, some more fuel was added to the proverbial fire. On an episode of the Sacred Symbols podcast, Colin Moriarty -- ex-IGN editor and industry veteran -- claimed that he had seen confirmation from a trusted source that the Red Dead Redemption remaster was real, and that it's seemingly quite far along in development. Moriarty even goes as far as to say that the Red Dead Redemption remaster could receive an announcement as early as August, which is a bold, but very exciting claim.
Red Dead Redemption is available on PS3 and Xbox 360.
