In Red Dead Redemption, snakes are one of the most elusive creatures to track down because they live away from bustling towns and roadways. Moreover, snakes don't move like other animals, and their low profile nature can make you pass by without even noticing them. However, if you're aiming to unlock the Unnatural Selection achievement or obtain the Expert Hunter outfit, you'll need to track and skin these slithering creatures.

Unlike other wild creatures, snakes tend to hide in bushes, which makes it even more challenging to notice them while you're exploring the world. Nevertheless, if you keep your ears open for the distinct rattling when you’re around these reptiles, it’ll make it easier to track and hunt them down.

Best Snake Locations In Red Dead Redemption

In Red Dead Redemption, snakes are commonly found in arid and dry regions, such as deserts and plains. You’re also more likely to encounter them during the daytime as opposed to in the nighttime. Surprisingly, snakes are widespread across all three main regions in the game, except for the mountains. But, if you'd like to quickly find and hunt down these creatures to either unlock the associated achievement or sell their skins for some extra cash, the following locations are ideal for farming these reptiles:

  1. Henningan’s Stead: If you’re still early into the game, you can find some snakes around Hennigan’s Stead, located northwest of MacFarlane's Ranch.
  2. Odd Fellow's Rest: You can find plenty of snakes in the Ridgewood Farm, located north of Rio Bravo. Consider exploring this area on foot, as the snake rattles and hisses become more pronounced when you're on foot instead of on horseback. Ridgewood Farm isn't just a habitat for snakes but also a hunting ground for cougars that prowl this area, so make sure that you frequently scan your surroundings to prepare for potential cougar ambushes.
  3. Coot's Chapel: Some snakes can also be found east of Coot's Chapel, which is a small church located southeast of Armadillo Town.
  4. Escelara: If you've made it to Mexico, you find a lot of snakes east of Escelara. Interestingly, snakes spawn here at all times, making it a reliable farming spot for any time of the day.
  5. Manzanita Post: In the late game, you can find a few snakes west of Manzanite Post in Tall Trees.

How To Hunt Snakes In Red Dead Redemption

John Marston finding a snake in Red Dead Redemption

As mentioned earlier, snakes are difficult to spot as they conveniently blend in with the surrounding environment or hide in the bushes. However, when you're near a snake, you'll hear a distinct rattle that can help you pinpoint its location.

If you get too close to the snake, John can suffer a snake bite, which leads to major health damage. So, consider slowing down when you hear the rattle and try to pinpoint the source of the sound before proceeding towards it.

If you're on horseback, you'll notice the horse turning restless when a snake is in proximity, which is also a cue to tread carefully.

When hunting a snake, avoid using powerful weapons like shotguns or the Buffalo Rifle. These weapons tend to ruin the carcass and prevent skinning the kill. Light weapons like pistols, revolvers, and repeaters are all ideal for hunting snakes.
