John Marston can own 12 safehouses in Red Dead Redemption as he travels across different states to save his family. Marston’s odyssey to kill his old friends from the Van der Linde gang is one that will tire him out and force him to reflect on his past, so what better place to do that than from the comfort of one’s own abode?
Red Dead Redemption: All Outfits (& How to Unlock Them)
There are a total of eighteen outfits in Red Dead Redemption you can reveal and unlock, some of which will grant special bonus effects when worn.
Despite all safehouses in Red Dead Redemption offering a chest and a bed for John Marston, it’s worth looking at the best of them so that John can hang up his hat, boots, and revolver in a place that he can safely call home without feeling like he’s overpaid for a rundown cabin that doesn’t feel safe or homely.
Rented properties that are not permanent to own will not be considered for this list, thus excluding the Plainview Safehouse and Ridgewood Farm Safehouse.

We Shall Be Together in Paradise, 25th mission. |
After arriving in Mexico for the first time, players will immediately have a safehouse to stop them from having to traverse down the dangerous river that connects Mexico to New Austin, especially since John Marston cannot swim. This safehouse is Irish’s Shack, and it is modest, to say the least. There’s nothing to like about this shack, even if it is free. The shack itself is a hastily made wooden shack that’s fastened together with sticks, with a metal bed frame that cannot be comfortable to sleep on, especially in the sweltering heat.
11 El Matadero Safehouse
Arm-Wrestle and Socialize with the Workers You Bunk With
|
Location |
Diez Coronas, Nuevo Paraiso |
|---|---|
|
Price |
$300 |
|

We Shall Be Together in Paradise, 25th mission. |
As players venture to El Matadero, they will find that there isn’t that much to love about it or that much to have fun with. It’s a small town for working families, and the only thing that players can find here is an arm-wrestling minigame and a Maxim Gun on the safehouse itself. Speaking of the safehouse, players are going to spend a lot of money for a cabin that they get no privacy with, as El Matadero’s safehouse has plenty of beds so that people at work can rest, which doesn’t give John Marston the privacy that he might want throughout his adventure.
10 Rathskeller Fork Safehouse
A Small Shack for Gambling and Drinking the Day Away
|
Location |
Gaptooth Ridge, New Austin |
|---|---|
|
Price |
$100 |
|
Available After |
Obstacles in Our Path, 3rd mission. |
Another small area where players can purchase property is Rathskeller Fork, where players can hang up their hat and reminisce on the journey so far. If players aren’t too impressed with the housing arrangements of a small bed and chest from a tightly compacted room, then they can stretch their legs at the nearest Blackjack table and play Horseshoes. It’s a travelers’ inn where players can pick up bounties and head out into the larger world, but there’s not much else to warrant a long stay.
9 MacFarlane’s Ranch Safehouse
A Ranch Home Away From Home

MacFarlane's Ranch, New Austin |

Exodus in America, 1st mission. |
MacFarlane’s Ranch is the first safehouse that players will own in Red Dead Redemption, as it’s free after the first mission. Being free already makes this safehouse a great addition, and the visuals of this shack also help. It’s a humble little cabin that John Marston owns with his own hitching post, close to a healthy and hearty ranch of people who seem to like John. It’s a simple place with simple people, close to a train station, a gang hideout, and plenty of fun activities, so there’s hardly any reason why MacFarlane’s Ranch safehouse isn’t one of the best.
8 Manzanita Post Safehouse
A Quiet Cabin of Solitude for Hunters Who Like the Cold
|
Location |
Tall Trees, West Elizabeth |
|---|---|
|
Price |
$400 |
|
Available After |
Obstacles in Our Path, 3rd mission. |
A quiet little cabin in the middle of a dangerous forest. Purchasing the Manzanita Post safehouse will set players back around $400, but they are rewarded with a nice shack for their cash. This cabin is perfect for players who like to get away from the bustle of cities and the harsh and hot climate of New Austin, as the Manzanita Post cabin is perfect for its winter aesthetics. With a bearskin rug and a fireplace, this two-bed cabin is a lovely home away from home for John Marston, but it’s only really good if players enjoy hunting in Tall Trees and don’t exactly want to linger around civilization.

Price |
$250 |
|

We Shall Be Together in Paradise, 25th mission. |
A small property that players can find on the second floor of a brothel in Casa Madrugada, this humble abode has everything players could need for their adventure in Mexico. A bed, a chest, and even an armoire for some cash, this small settlement has everything players will need for a side adventure, even if it lacks a general store for purchases. What players can grab is some fun, as Poker and Liar’s Dice feature in the same brothel where players will sleep, just be sure not to get into any trouble just because Abigail Marston is away.
6 Chuparosa Safehouse
A Mexican House for Adventures South of the Border
|
Location |
Perdido, Nuevo Paraiso |
|---|---|
|
Price |
$200 |
|
Available After |
We Shall Be Together in Paradise, 25th mission. |
A central area for plenty of missions in Mexico, players would be smart to invest in Chuparosa as a home for their stay. The safehouse might feel rather large, but empty at the same time. A cost of $200 is a decent ask when one considers what they can get in Chuparosa, which consists of a General Store, Doctor’s Office, along with a saloon for Poker and Blackjack to be played and enjoyed when John finds some downtime.
5 Thieves’ Landing Safehouse
A Perfect Boat House for Gamblers and Fiends
|
Location |
Hennigan's Stead, New Austin |
|---|---|
|
Price |
$100 |
|
Available After |
Obstacles in Our Path, 3rd mission. |
Thieves’ Landing is a dangerous place indeed, and it’s a civilization that’s built entirely on criminals. The wrong look and the wrong twitch of a hand near a holster, and chaos could set off a chain of events, which is why the Thieves’ Landing Safehouse could be a necessity for those who want to live here. The cabin itself is across the street from the Thieves’ Landing saloon, and John might not be the most comfortable here since it’s situated on a dock with water that he could easily drown in. However, Thieves’ Landing is a great place to be for those who like to gamble and cheat, so it’s hard not to love this small and humble cabin when it’s situated around such fun activities.
4 Armadillo Safehouse
A Starting Home for New Austin Adventures
|
Location |
Armadillo, New Austin |
|---|---|
|
Price |
$50 |
|
Available After |
Obstacles in Our Path, 3rd mission. |
While Armadillo might have had a cholera issue a few years back, it seems that this humble wooden town is on the up. Armadillo is going to be the central location for players early in Red Dead Redemption, so it might be worth spending a bit of cash to hold a room here, even if it’s not the nicest. Armadillo’s Saloon is where players can purchase this safehouse, and while not the best, it still gets the job done with a simple bed and chest. Downstairs, players are always going to find trouble with the wandering Walton Gang members that like to drink, and the constant chatter from the bar and the piano playing might make this a room that’s not the easiest to relax in, but it is nice to party and have a central location for the general store, medicine supplies, and to venture out into the wider world of New Austin.

A Humble Abode in a Mexican Town Filled with Activity
|
Location |
Punta Orgullo, Nuevo Paraiso |
|---|---|
|
Price |
$150 |
|
Available After |
We Shall Be Together in Paradise, 25th mission. |
The biggest city found in Red Dead Redemption’s Mexico is Escalera, and that’s proven by the abundance of activity and shops found here, which makes it a great location to set up camp. The Escalera room is large and cheap, costing only a mere $150, which provides players with everything they need to change outfits, sleep, save, and get ammunition from chests. Outside of the enjoyable room from Escalera is a delightful saloon with Liar’s Dice, Five Finger Fillet, a General Store, Doctor’s Office, and a Gunsmith, so that players truly have everything to choose from when they head to Mexico.
