The Van Der Linde Gang is central to everything that happens in Red Dead Redemption 2. And the crew is filled with 26 members who all have their own distinct personalities. Naturally, there are some unsavory people among the bunch because a person’s level of kindness isn’t a priority for an outlaw group.
What is important, though, is how much they contribute. Nobody wants to risk their life just to share food and resources with those who do nothing. The Van Der Linde Gang has a mix of useful people and ones who are simply taking up space. But how valuable is each individual member?
26 Molly O'Shea
Because of her romantic relationship with Dutch, Molly doesn't have to do any work around camp or go on missions. And, the special treatment she receives makes her incredibly unpopular with everyone else.
25 Reverend Swanson
Swanson's perpetually drunken state means he can't lend a hand to his gang mates for most of the game. In fact, he's a hindrance, evidenced by the time Arthur has to save him from being hit by a train. Even when sober, he still doesn't contribute.
24 Jack Marston
As Jack is only a small child, it's understandable that his usefulness is limited. He's too young to do many chores, and he certainly can't help rob trains. At least his youthful exuberance brings the mood up.
23 Joe
Joe only joins the gang shortly before its demise; therefore, he doesn't get long to prove his worth. During his short tenure, he does take part in the robbery of the Army's train, yet only in a small role.
22 Cleet
Like Joe, Cleet joins the gang late in its existence and only helps with the Army train robbery. However, Cleet is a bigger part of that mission than Joe. He jumps aboard the train and collects the money alongside Arthur and Sadie.
21 Kieran Duffy
Kieran is someone who could do more if the gang allowed it, yet as a former O'Driscoll, he's never fully trusted. Still, he does lead the gang to an O'Driscoll camp that they're able to wipe out, and he later spends significant time looking after everyone's horses.
20 Uncle
If he could get away with it, Uncle would do no work whatsoever. Yet despite his laziness and his mysterious lumbago illness, others occasionally force him to go on missions. And he's relatively adept at robbing and killing when he isn't sleeping.
19 Leopold Strauss
Strauss's level of usefulness is difficult to determine. His main contribution comes from his loansharking.
Yet, it's unclear how much money he makes through that endeavor, especially as he often targets people who don't have the means to pay their debts. Although, he must make something from his immoral business.
18 Josiah Trelawny
The smooth-talking Trelawny is a double-edged sword. He frequently needs to be rescued, but he also provides the gang with valuable information, most notably when he divulges Sean's whereabouts.
17 Karen Jones
In the first half of the game, Karen does plenty of chores and is even the mastermind behind the Valentine bank heist. Unfortunately, when things start going wrong, she doesn't do much besides drink, and becomes a belligerent alcoholic.
