It may not come as a surprise, then, to learn that Red Dead Redemption 2 is a major sales success for the developer.
GTA 6 Release Window Officially Confirmed
Rockstar Games' highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto 6 finally gets an official release window, which should relieve concerns about potential delays.
Red Dead Redemption 2 is approaching 64 million copies sold, which makes it the seventh-best selling game in the entire world. For comparison, some of the major hitters the title has outsold include Pokemon Red and Blue, Overwatch, mega Switch hit Animal Crossing: New Horizons, and The Witcher 3. The game has even outperformed the original Super Mario Bros., cementing its position in gaming history.
While 64 million copies sold is nothing to scoff at, there's still a long way for Red Dead Redemption 2 to go before it could even breach the top 5 best-selling games. Mario Kart 8 and its Deluxe version are in 6th place with 70 million units sold, PUBG is ahead of it with 75 million, and Wii Sports comes in fourth with nearly 83 million copies. The top three titles are Minecraft with a whopping 300 million copies, GTA 5 in second place with 200 million, and EA's version of Tetris with 100 million.
The Neglected Rockstar Game
While Red Dead Redemption 2 deserves its incredible sales record, the realization that it has performed so well yet largely been neglected has fans upset. Red Dead Online's development has been largely abandoned, with only minor patches and updates coming to the title despite the much older GTA Online still receiving regular updates. Players have also complained about Red Dead Redemption 2's bugs going unfixed, while others have lamented what expansions or DLC for the game could have done to add additional story. To be fair, GTA 5 also didn't receive any story expansions in the single player game, but that's a sore spot among its community as well, fueling further scorn.
Red Dead Redemption 2 is a classic that's sold extremely well. One can imagine if the title had received content updates and expansion that it would have performed even better. Still, the title is an incredible adventure for anyone who enjoys open world games, old west themes, or those who simply love a good story.
