  • An exploit in Red Dead Redemption 2 turns the gang into followers.
  • Some bugs in Red Dead Redemption 2 can unexpectedly benefit players.

A Red Dead Redemption 2 player has discovered a hilarious exploit that allows them to turn the van der Linde gang into Arthur Morgan's personal protection. In a way, this Red Dead Redemption 2 bug adds a feature that some might feel belonged in the game in the first place.

Over the years, there have been tons of weird and wonderful Red Dead Redemption 2 glitches found by the community. In a game of its size, it's only natural that many bugs will be found, even years after its release. Some of these bugs can even prove to be quite valuable to players, which could explain why Rockstar hasn't patched them out. For example, there was once a Red Dead Redemption 2 glitch that made it easy for players to make money, which, while not exactly lore-friendly, was definitely useful from a gameplay perspective.

Redditor KingAbacus shared a funny Red Dead Redemption 2 bug that transforms the van der Linde gang into followers. They antagonized the gang in camp until they attempted to knock Arthur out, then immediately grabbed a bowl of stew. This causes the gang to follow the player until they finish the stew. If this never happens, the gang follows the player forever, and according to KingAbacus, they will even "shoot for you if needed," with many players in the thread pointing out that they had never seen this bug happen in-game.

There was a slight concern over whether players would still be able to use their horses when using this glitch. After all, having Red Dead Redemption 2's van der Linde gang as a personal army is great, but it's hardly of much use if it takes hours to travel anywhere on foot. KingAbacus couldn't answer that specific query, but they did mention that they were able to get on a cart, at which point the rest of the gang mounted up on their own horses, so it seems that travel is possible when using this bug.

It has been almost seven years since the release of Red Dead Redemption 2, but the next game in the series still seems very far away. Earlier this month, a former Rockstar developer confirmed that Grand Theft Auto 6 has only been in development since Red Dead Redemption 2's release, and it's possible that the same may apply to the next iteration of its premier Western franchise. It's a sad thought that the next game in the series may still be so far away, but Rockstar fans are no strangers to long waits.
