Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart is one of the most anticipated PS5 games of the year, as both developer Insomniac Games and publisher Sony have been hyping it up for a while now. Promising to make full use of the PS5's impressive potential, players will be able to warp around to different dimensions in an instant without loading screens bogging things down. While this is sure to be amazing, some fans are wondering whether or not the game features any sort of multiplayer. The titular Ratchet and Clank are a duo of heroes that would be perfect for a two player game, and Rift Apart even takes things a step further by introducing Rivet, another Lombax.
At the time of writing, Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart is less than one month away from release, a breath of fresh air for those that have been waiting since it was revealed almost a full year ago. Still, the question of multiplayer in the game actually remains somewhat shrouded in mystery.
Insomniac Games recently made a statement about multiplayer in Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart as part of its support page for the title. Unfortunately, it seems that there won't be any multiplayer, competitive or cooperative, as Insomniac says it has no plans to have any kind of multiplayer component in the game. Although multiplayer and coop are sometimes taken to be separate things, it's probably best to assume that there won't be any form of multiplayer in Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart.
The Ratchet and Clank franchise set the precedent for including multiplayer in its previous games, so fans can't be blamed for hoping to see it in the latest installment. 2004's Ratchet and Clank: Up Your Arsenal featured a competitive multiplayer mode in which teams would face off against each other. Just one year later, Ratchet and Clank: Deadlocked let players go through the main story in co-op, and had its own competitive mode as well. In 2007, Ratchet and Clank: Size Matters brought back competitive multiplayer and even introduced some co-op elements. Finally, 2011's Ratchet and Clank: All 4 One took things a step further with a four player cooperative campaign.
While it's certainly unfortunate that players won't be able to experience Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart together, it hopefully means that Insomniac Games had more time to craft a thrilling singleplayer narrative instead. Only time will tell, but players don't have long to wait now before the game finally releases.
Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart releases on June 11th for PS5.
