It seems like only yesterday, but the first Smile movie was released in 2022. So, avid fans of that horror film have been itching for a sequel for a bit now. Technically, Smile 2 does pick up where the first movie left off but there are not a lot of factors that newbies would be lost on beyond the first ten minutes.
Viewers may have questions about that intro but there are more prevalent ones at hand involving all of the characters in Smile 2. It may be another two to three years until Smile 3, so for now it is time to speculate. There will be spoilers.

6 Where Does The Smile Virus Come From
Is It All Just One Big Analogy?
Not every horror movie needs to have its lore explained. Some movies work better if viewers have no idea what is going on as long as the core rules are mostly explained. In the first movie, the protagonist learns about this curse that makes people hallucinate until it gets so bad the infected user has to kill themself.
If someone is there in the room to witness it, they will get this horrific curse passed on. That’s the same case in Smile 2 as the heroine of the film, Skye, soon learns. Will the writers ever show where this curse came from in a sequel or prequel?
5 How Much Was Skye Delusional Of?
The Lies Have To Start Somewhere
There are a lot of questions left on the cutting room floor of Smile 2 but the finale will probably throw viewers for a loop the most. After getting attacked by herself, Skye wakes up onstage after emerging from an egg-like device that was foreshadowed earlier in the movie.

She’s in the middle of a concert with tons of fans cheering and her mom is still alive on the sidelines. This is when Skye can’t handle it any longer and she gets fully possessed by a horror monster thus leading to her suicide onstage. Did that really happen or was that an illusion? It’s hard to believe half of the movie was an illusion instead, right?
4 Who Is Dead And Who Is Alive?

Let’s say for a second that the concert was a lie or at least part of it was. Who then died in the movie? Is that vision of her mom real, or did Skye kill her? What about Morris’ brother who did the old crowbar trick to his jaw?
And then there is Skye herself. She could be alive if the concert was an illusion and everyone that was supposed to be dead through the course of the movie still is indeed dead except her. Again, there are a lot of questions within questions that need addressing.
3 Where Did Morris Go?
Or Was He Imaginary Too?
If Morris was a real person then where did he go? After Skye witnessed Lewis kill himself, she starts getting mysterious texts from a stranger. This stranger is a man named Morris who is not a detective, some creepy stalker, or even an illusion. Instead, his brother died from the curse and now he wants to stop it.
Eventually, Morris leads Skye into a freezer with the sole purpose of fake killing her with drugs to hopefully fool the curse. It’s silly to assume two humans can trick a horror movie curse but at least Morris is trying something. If this all happens, where did Morris go? He says he has to leave to get something and then Skye gets attacked by herself. Either Morris was never real or he legitimately left to get something and presumably found Skye dead when he returned.

There Are Other Missing Links
Some missing backstory notes in Smile 2 are not too important to the plot but viewers may still be curious. For example, Gemma is Skye’s best friend and it’s said that they haven’t talked in over a year because of some incident involving drugs.

Let’s go back to the whole movie was a lie theory and Skye kills herself onstage. That means hundreds of people witnessed this happen if not thousands. Are they all infected now? Will Smile 3 be like some big viral breakout scenario wherein people are killing themselves all over the United States?
It would take this horror series to the next level. It could either be truly terrifying and great or it could end up being weird like The Happening which Smile 2 shares a lot in common with. In that movie, people commit suicide because nature tells them to do it. Out of context that probably sounds weird but it’s no less goofy in The Happening.
