Update 5/29: Sony has confirmed the PlayStation 5 game reveal event for Thursday, June 4, not Wednesday, June 3.
Original story follows.
Earlier this year, the release dates for Doom Eternal and Animal Crossing: New Horizons fell on the same day. It was considered a major day for gaming, and it's safe to say both games lived up to expectations and then some. Doom Eternal earned high praise from critics, and Animal Crossing: New Horizons became a bonafide cultural phenomenon, really being the perfect game for the current age of isolation and social distancing.
There are just some days where there's a lot going on in the gaming world, and these days tend to be especially exciting for gamers. As it so happens, the upcoming Wednesday, June 3 is on track to be another huge day for those that follow the video game industry, and for a few different reasons.
June 3 will see the start of a couple big in-game events for two of the most popular video games in the world, and it may also be the day that Sony finally pulls the curtain back on the PlayStation 5 game lineup. Here's more on what gamers can expect from June 3.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Warzone Season 4
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare has been on a roll, with consistent content updates since launch to keep it as one of the top games in the world. Infinity Ward's constant support of Modern Warfare is undoubtedly playing a role in the game's continued dominance of sales charts even months after its release, whether it's the new multiplayer map additions or the introduction of the mega-popular Warzone battle royale.
On June 3, both Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Warzone will be entering Season 4. Like past seasons, Modern Warfare Season 4 is expected to bring with it plenty of new content for fans of the game to sink their teeth into. This will likely include a couple of new weapons, a mix of new and remade multiplayer maps, and some big changes to Warzone. There will also be a brand new Battle Pass that players can complete to unlock a slew of new content for the game.
As it stands, the only new content that's actually been confirmed for Modern Warfare Season 4 is Captain Price as a multiplayer operator. Infinity Ward and Activision have otherwise kept their cards close to their chest, but fans can expect more information early next week. Considering how popular Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Warzone have been, the Season 4 update will no doubt be a big event come June 3.
PlayStation 5 Game Reveal
Sony has largely kept quiet about its lineup of PlayStation 5 games, but that's expected to change next week. Numerous, reliable industry insiders have claimed that Sony plans on hosting a special presentation on June 3 where it will reveal some brand new PS5 game s, and quite possibly give fans a look at some of the titles that will be available for the next-generation console at launch. Rumors have been swirling about exactly what games Sony may showcase, but hopefully the speculation is put to rest come June 3.
Unfortunately, Sony itself has yet to officially announce that it will be hosting a PlayStation 5 gameplay presentation on June 3. There is still a chance that the presentation could be delayed due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, so it's possible that this particular event will miss the date. However, if Sony does indeed reveal its slate of PlayStation 5 games on June 3, it would most certainly make the date a significant one in gaming history, with or without the other events mentioned here.
In the meantime, one has to wonder what else Sony may reveal of the PS5 if it does host a presentation on June 3 as rumored. There's still a lot that fans don't know about the console, including how it looks, what the PS5 price will be, or when they will actually be able to buy it. While fans shouldn't expect all of the answers on June 3, hopefully they get at least some of them.
Pokemon GO Throwback Challenge Champion 2020
In the mobile gaming space, June 3 is going to be a big day for Pokemon GO fans. For those who may be out of the loop, Pokemon GO has been hosting its special Throwback Challenge 2020 event, giving fans of the popular augmented reality mobile game one of their best chances yet to catch rare Pokemon and better-complete their Pokedex. The big event is set to conclude with the Throwback Challenge Champion 2020 Special Research, which will go live in Pokemon GO on June 3 at 1:00pm local time.
Any Pokemon GO player that managed to complete all of the Throwback Challenge research tasks will get free access to the Throwback Challenge Champion 2020 Special Research. Those that failed to complete any of the Throwback Challenge research tasks will be able to buy their way in, so they don't have to worry about missing out. The event will also include some other bonuses for Pokemon GO enthusiasts to look forward to, like the debut of various Galarian Pokemon, and the chance to catch more Unova region Pokemon.
The Pokemon GO Throwback Challenge Champion 2020 Special Research and the accompanying Galarian Pokemon event should ensure that June 3 is a big day for fans of the game. However, there should be plenty more exciting content for Pokemon GO fans to look forward to this summer, like Pokemon GO Fest 2020, which is an all-digital event this time around that will allow more fans to participate than ever before.
Besides these three big events, it's possible that there's even more in store for gaming fans on June 3. And while there may not be anything else on June 3 specifically to get excited about, the rest of June should be huge for gamers, as the announcements usually reserved for E3 will be spread out across the month as part of special Summer Game Fest events.
So far, the Summer Game Fest June schedule includes the Steam Game Festival on June 9, a special Cyberpunk 2077 presentation on June 11, EA Play on June 11, and a developer showcase on June 22. It's likely that there will be even more Summer Game Fest events in June that just haven't been announced yet, so gamers should expect June 3 and the rest of the month to be plenty exciting.
