Sony has revealed that the PlayStation 5 Pro will soon get a new enhanced version of the PSSR feature. Launched in November 2024, the PS5 Pro is a major upgrade over the base model, boasting a GPU that's 45% faster, improved ray tracing, and AI-powered upscaling. It stands as the most powerful console hardware that's currently available in the PlayStation lineup of consoles.
Despite these massive upgrades, the console's debut wasn't a smooth ride. PS5 Pro's $700 price tag drew criticism from many players in the community, and some even questioned whether the upgrade justifies the massive cost. Still, in early 2025, PlayStation's lead architect Mark Cerny confirmed that an improved PSSR update for PS5 Pro was planned for 2026. This news excited many in the community, as the feature promised to push the graphical performance of the console to greater heights. After months of silence from Sony regarding the feature, though, that wait has finally come to an end.

A reliable source divulges details on an upcoming new model of the PlayStation 5 Pro that could include slight hardware tweaks.
PS5 Pro Receives an Upgraded PSSR Upscaling Feature
Sony has confirmed that an upgraded version of PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution) will soon roll out worldwide to PS5 Pro players in the upcoming weeks. According to the company, this upgraded version of the feature not only refines the neural network component but also the algorithm as well. Sony has revealed that Resident Evil Requiem is the first game in its catalog to feature the new PSSR. It allows the game to have a better image quality and smoother frame rates.
Capcom's Masaru Ijuin offered additional details about how the new PS5 Pro update benefits Resident Evil Requiem. He explains that the team was able to improve the game's presentation quality, particularly the protagonist, through an improved version of the RE engine that's designed to enhance immersion. For instance, players will be able to see the individual strands of hair and beard as they're rendered as polygons. This allows for more natural reactions to light and movement. According to him, these fine details are typically difficult to upscale, but Capcom was able to do it thanks to the improved PSSR. To highlight the improvements, Sony has also released a screenshot of the upgraded PSSR technology working in Resident Evil Requiem, showcasing the details in Grace's character model.
Sony further goes on to reveal that the upgrades to PSSR's neural and algorithmic systems come from Project Amethyst. This is a collaborative project between Sony and AMD. PC players have already been able to enjoy the benefits of this partnership through AMD's FSR4 upscaling technology. Now, Sony wants to bring a refined version of that co-developed innovation to PS5 Pro users, which will improve the gameplay performance and visuals. The company also confirms that existing games in the PlayStation catalog will also soon be able to take advantage of the improved PSSR. There's a PS5 Pro software update coming soon that will introduce the option to "Enhance PSSR Image Quality," which will enable supported games to take advantage of the feature.
The ultimate goal of the improved PSSR is to raise both graphic quality and performance on the PS5 Pro console. It's great to see that Sony is continuing to support the PS5 Pro with such enhancements that only add more value to the console. What's going to be interesting is how upcoming releases like Grand Theft Auto 6 make use of the PS5 Pro's capabilities. With the PS6 still years away, the PS5 Pro will continue to be one of the best ways to experience console gaming for the foreseeable future.
