Summary
- PS5 Pro 30th Anniversary Edition pre-orders in Japan will require a PSN account and at least 30 hours of playtime on a PS4 or PS5.
- These restrictions aim to curb scalping, which was a big problem after PS5 Pro 30th Anniversary Edition pre-orders went live in the US and UK.
Sony Japan has laid out some mandates for buyers looking to pre-order a PS5 Pro 30th Anniversary Edition bundle, such as having a PSN account and a minimum amount of playtime logged on PlayStation consoles. This is a welcome move to fight scalpers, especially after the limited-edition PS5 Pro bundle was subjected to heavy scalping in other regions.
The PS5 Pro is already an enthusiast console, but the 30th Anniversary Edition bundle dials it up to the max with its classic PS1-inspired color scheme and numerous matching accessories, namely a standard DualSense, DualSense Edge, disc drive cover, vertical stand, and controller charging station. If that doesn't make the PS5 Pro 30th Anniversary Edition desirable enough, its limited production run of 12,300 units cements it as a veritable collector's item that befits the living room setups of the most devoted PlayStation fans.
Some PS5 Pro 30th Anniversary Edition Pre-Orders Are Being Canceled
PS5 Pro 30th Anniversary Edition buyers are reporting that their orders for the console are being canceled with no hope of resolution.
Pre-orders in the US and UK told a completely different story, though, as the PS5 Pro 30th Anniversary Edition bundle sold out in seconds and scalpers immediately started listing them online at ridiculous markups. Genuine PlayStation enthusiasts were left disgruntled over the lack of restrictions making it easy for scalpers to buy and resell the commemorative PS5 Pro bundles, and it seems Sony has been listening to the criticisms. Ahead of PS5 Pro 30th Anniversary Edition pre-orders going live in Japan, the regional PlayStation website outlined some conditions that prospective buyers must meet to secure a bundle.
PS5 Pro 30th Anniversary Edition Pre-Orders Have a Set of Requirements in Japan
- PlayStation Network account registered in Japan
- At least 30 hours of playtime on a PS4 or PS5 linked to this account
- Playtime will be counted between February 14, 2014, and September 19, 2024
In order to nab a PS5 Pro 30th Anniversary Edition bundle, Japanese buyers must have a PlayStation Network account registered in Japan itself, and at least 30 hours of playtime logged on either a PS4 or PS5 associated with this account between February 14, 2014, and September 19, 2024. These restrictions should be quite effective in warding off scalpers and ensuring PlayStation fans have a fair chance to pre-order a PS5 Pro 30th Anniversary Edition bundle. Since the 30-hour playtime is only counted up until September 19, scalpers won't be able to circumvent the rules by leaving a PS4 or PS5 turned on for 30 hours.
PlayStation fans, especially those in Japan, have breathed a sigh of relief thanks to these constraints. However, Sony should've introduced them for the PS5 Pro 30th Anniversary Edition's US and UK pre-orders as well, given how bad the PS5's scalping situation was after it launched in holiday 2020. One can only hope that future PlayStation consoles and limited editions will have these requirements in place globally.
