Summary
- Spelunky 2 has been officially released for PS5, running natively and offering up to 120 FPS.
- Fans can download the PS5 version for free if they previously purchased the PS4 edition.
Popular roguelike Spelunky 2 has been officially released for the PlayStation 5. While it was possible to play Spelunky 2 on the PS5 before through backward compatibility, it was not natively available, and the new version comes with an important improvement that will likely be appreciated by fans.
Developed by Mossmouth and BlitWorks, Spelunky 2 was originally released in 2020 for the PlayStation 4 and PC, receiving ports for the Nintendo Switch and Xbox One and Series X/S in 2021 and 2022, respectively. When it was released, Spelunky 2 received glowing reviews, becoming one of the highest-rated games of 2020. Among the most praised characteristics of the 2D roguelike platformer were how replayable it was, its large amount of gameplay options, and the fun multiplayer.
Every Spelunky 2 Mystery and Secret Discovered Since Launch
The critically-acclaimed sequel to an Indie darling, Spelunky 2 is finally hitting Xbox consoles this month, and there are plenty of secrets to find.
Now, Spelunky 2 has been shadow-dropped for PlayStation 5. Luckily, the PS5 version of the game can be downloaded as a free upgrade by anyone who has already purchased the PS4 edition of the popular roguelike. With Spelunky 2 running natively on PS5, gamers can play it at up to 120 frames per second if their display is compatible with high frame rates, getting a smoother experience than they would with the PS4 version. Essentially, this seems like the ultimate way to play the popular 2020 game on consoles, and is also a welcome late addition, considering that Xbox gamers had access to the next-gen Series X/S version of the title in 2022.
Spelunky 2 Runs at 120 FPS After Being Shadow Dropped on PS5
In Spelunky 2, gamers play as Ana Spelunky, the daughter of the first game’s protagonist, as she ventures to the Moon to find her missing parents. However, the main draw of the game is not its story, but the addictive roguelike gameplay as players explore the world, find new items, and unlock tunnels that can be used as shortcuts. The original Spelunky was considered one of the games that helped to popularize the roguelike genre, and the sequel improved essentially all aspects of the experience.
Unfortunately, the release of Spelunky 2 does not mean that its creators will return to work with the franchise anytime soon, either developing a sequel or another game in the same universe. Back in 2024, Mossmouth developer Derek Yu revealed that the team was not working on Spelunky 3, disappointing fans. In any case, gamers can at least play the action roguelike game at 120 FPS on the PS5 if they are missing the popular franchise.
