Despite the past week having been a bit slower in terms of new game releases, the PS5 library still has a few choice titles that are new to the platform, including one of this summer's most anticipated games. Along with Mafia: The Old Country arriving as what's arguably the week's biggest title, there are a handful of other new games on PS5 that are worth checking out this weekend as part of any gaming-related plans. There's even a massive open beta for one of the year's most exciting shooters that's active over the next few days.
One of the most surprising games that's new to PS5 this week is the shadow-dropped update of classic FPS games Heretic and Hexen, arriving as part of a package fittingly dubbed Heretic + Hexen and helmed by FPS restoration specialists Nightdive Studios. Considering Nightdive is fresh off delivering the excellent remaster of System Shock 2, it's unexpected to see the studio deliver another project so soon. Between remasters, PC-to-console ports, and new entries in beloved franchises, 2025 has been a banner year for the FPS genre.
Mafia: The Old Country
Arguably this week's biggest release, Mafia: The Old Country is finally out and making a strong first impression with both critics and players. As is the case with the other games in the Mafia series, Mafia: The Old World places linear, narrative-driven adventure over open-world exploration and side content, telling a compelling story that takes players back to the early days of the Italian mafia in 19th-century Sicily. It's reportedly a fairly short experience, meaning it could be possible to tackle the entire campaign over the course of the weekend.

Gradius Origins
Konami is continuing its rollout of collections bringing together the studio's greatest hits with Gradius Origins, which puts the first three Gradius games and all their spin-offs under one umbrella. Most exciting about Gradius Origins, though, is that the arcade ports are being handled by shmup experts M2, who also lent their talents as developers for the brand-new Slamander 3 that's included in the package. Shoot 'em up fans just got an essential addition for their PS5 library.

Battlefield 6
This one comes with a bit of an asterisk, but if you happen to be one of the lucky ones with an early access code for the Battlefield 6 open beta, you can jump in this weekend to get a crash course in the latest iteration of EA and DICE's iconic shooter franchise. Even without a code, there are plenty of users who are sharing codes on Twitter and Reddit to bring more players into the fold, which has almost certainly contributed to Battlefield 6's beta having some eye-watering queues of players hoping to get in and experience its new maps. By all accounts, Battlefield 6 seems to be in great shape to have a stronger launch than Battlefield 2042.

Ready or Not
VOID Interactive recently released some exciting data on the console ports for Ready or Not, sharing that they've collectively sold 2 million copies across both the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions since launch. Despite some technical issues that are still being ironed out, it seems as if console players were, in fact, ready for Ready or Not, which delivers an old-school tactical shooter experience on par with the best games in the Rainbow Six or SWAT franchise. The weekend might be one of the best times to dive into some co-op and see what Ready or Not is all about.

Heretic + Hexen
After launching the 25th anniversary remaster of System Shock 2 just last month, FPS remaster experts Nightdive Studios have done it again with a surprise launch of Heretic and Hexen remasters. Raven Software's iconic FPS titles still hold up as some of the more exciting and forward-thinking entries in the genre from a time when it was still finding its footing, and having both games available on modern hardware is a win for both FPS fans and game preservation.
