An Xbox Series X/S port of the PS5 console-exclusive RPG Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is not off the table for 2026, according to a known gaming industry insider. Although Square Enix previously confirmed it would port Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth to Xbox consoles at some point, the company could still surprise fans with a quick turnaround.

Originally launched in February 2024, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth picked up immediately where Final Fantasy 7 Remake left off, as the main cast explored various parts of the world outside Midgar, such as Costa del Sol, Junon, and Cosmo Canyon. A year later, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth was ported to PC, with some graphical enhancements for players to utilize. Although Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth's plot loosely followed the first disc of Final Fantasy 7 on the PlayStation, the differences between the original FF7 and the ongoing remake saga are a unique selling point for Square Enix.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth Could Launch on More Systems Sooner Than Fans Think

While Square Enix previously stated that the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy would launch on as many platforms as possible, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth could lose its PS5 console exclusivity soon. According to gaming industry insider NateTheHate on Twitter, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth could launch on Xbox Series X/S sometime in 2026, though he did not provide an exact timeline when that could happen. However, NateTheHate followed up by stating that FF7 Rebirth would also launch on Nintendo Switch 2 in 2026. Of course, rumors about any potential ports of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth to other consoles should be taken with a fine grain of salt. Ergo, Final Fantasy fans should temper expectations until Square Enix comes forward with official information.

Despite the fact that Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is currently a PS5 console-exclusive title, the game's sales were stifled by being locked to one platform until 2025's PC port. With Xbox Series X/S and Switch 2 now being thrown into the mix, sales of Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Rebirth should gradually increase. The move to port Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth to Xbox also falls in line with Square Enix's 2024 strategy, when the company stated it would port its core IPs to as many platforms as possible. The change in strategy came after sales of Final Fantasy 16, a timed PS5 exclusive, fell short of expectations. As part of Square Enix's multiplatform approach, FF16 was later ported to PC and Xbox in 2024 and 2025, respectively.

2026 Could Be an Exciting Time for Final Fantasy 7 Fans

Although Square Enix has not stated when the Xbox and Switch 2 ports of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth will be released, fans will not have to wait long to experience a new Final Fantasy game on Microsoft and Nintendo consoles. On January 22, Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade will launch on the Xbox Series X/S and the Switch 2, nearly six years after the game's original PS4 launch. The upcoming Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade ports will include some new features that break the game, which Square Enix dubbed the Streamlined Progression system. Turning on Streamlined Progression will make players virtually unstoppable in combat, as each character's Limit Break gauges and ATB gauges will be consistently full, and their attacks will deal 9,999 damage to enemies. Streamlined Progression will also be added to the PS5 and PC versions of Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade via a free update once the Xbox and Switch 2 versions are released.

As for the future of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy, Square Enix stated that the name of Final Fantasy 7 Remake's third chapter has been narrowed down. Although no information about the upcoming entry's release date and platforms has been revealed, time will tell if Square Enix will launch FF7 Remake Part 3 on multiple platforms out of the gate.
