While it's not uncommon for video games to be announced a couple of years before they hit store shelves, it's rare to see a game announced four years in advance - but that's exactly what's happened with PlayStation 5 game The God Slayer. The God Slayer is a newly announced project coming as part of Sony's China Hero Project initiative, which sees the company partnering with Chinese developers.
Sony kicked off its China Hero Project back in 2017. Then in 2022, Sony recommitted to the China Hero Project by investing at least $140,000 into each game that was being made under the program's umbrella. Now Sony has showed off some of the China Hero Project games, with one of the most head-turning being The God Slayer on PS5 and its 2027 release window.
The God Slayer was announced alongside its 2027 release window and some impressive-looking screenshots that were shared by Gematsu. While The God Slayer is an original IP, the game's developer may be familiar to some fans. Its developer, Pathea Games, previously released the generally well-received life sim/RPG My Time at Portia, and are actively working on the co-op sequel, My Time at Sandrock. With Pathea currently busy working on My Time at Sandrock, it makes sense that The God Slayer is still years away from release.
It's likely that God Slayer will at least be a PS5 console exclusive, so fans can already look forward to a potential PS5 exclusive for 2027. Official court documents have suggested that the next generation of consoles won't release until 2028, so it's likely that 2027 will have some other PS5 exclusive games on offer as well. However, chances are good that fans will have to wait until we're much closer to that year before the rest of it starts filling up.
Sony likes to keep things focused on the more immediate future when it comes to its new game releases. Right now, it's heavily marketing PS5 exclusive game Spider-Man 2, and not much has been announced when it comes to the first-party PlayStation lineup for 2024. That doesn't mean that there's nothing on the way. On the contrary, Sony certainly has big games in the works for 2024 and beyond, but fans will just have to wait a while to see what's in store. For now, they can play current PS5 games while keeping The God Slayer in the back of their mind for its 2027 release.
The God Slayer will launch in 2027 for PS5.
