Summary

  • Astro Bot is the best-rated game of 2024, surpassing popular titles like Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree.
  • The game holds a 95 average rating on OpenCritic, making it one of the highest-rated games in history.
  • Team Asobi confirmed free DLC for Astro Bot, promising players additional content in the future.

PS5 exclusive game Astro Bot has become the best-rated game of 2024 ahead of its launch, thanks to a series of stellar scores from critics. The sequel to 2020's Astro's Playroom, Astro Bot, is scheduled to launch on September 6.

Robot characters that first appeared in a 2013 tech demo game, which came bundled with the PS4, have grown in popularity since getting their own game with 2018's Astro Bot Rescue Mission. When the PS5 hit the shelves in 2020, Astro's Playroom, which makes extensive use of the console's DualSense controller features, further contributed to making Astro Bot one of PlayStation's top first-party IPs. After a break of four years, the PlayStation mascot is now set to return soon, with dozens of highly positive reviews backing another successful run.

Astro Bot Sequel is Already Being Teased

Team Asobi's upcoming 3D platformer Astro Bot has yet to release, but a sequel for the game is seemingly being teased in a curious way.

On OpenCritic, Astro Bot currently holds a top critic average of 95 based on 74 review scores, fetching it a "Mighty" rating. This makes developer Team Asobi's game the highest-rated title to come out in 2024 so far, ahead of popular releases like Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. It is also the best-rated first-party PlayStation title in history and the eighth highest-rated game ever. Moreover, it stands in second place among the highest-rated platformers, only behind the 97-rated Super Mario Odyssey. The review aggregator site also shows that 100% of the critics who reviewed the game recommended it.

PS5 Exclusive Game is Now the Best-Rated Game of 2024

Having dethroned the 94-rated Shadow of the Erdtree, Astro Bot sits atop an illustrious list of critically acclaimed game releases from this year. After the Elden Ring DLC, it is followed by Fate/Stay Night Remastered (93), Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth (93), and Tsukihime: A Piece of Blue Glass Moon (92) at third, fourth, and fifth positions, respectively. In The Best War Games's own Astro Bot review, the platformer received a perfect 5-out-of-5 score, earning high praise mainly for its "gameplay variety," using the "PS5's unique features to their full potential," and "rewarding" collectibles.

With Astro Bot's official launch still some hours away at the time of writing, players looking forward to the game can rest assured they will be diving right into one of the most well-received titles ever. On top of that, Team Asobi chief Nicolas Doucet has already confirmed Astro Bot will be expanded via free DLC, promising additional content coming to the highly-rated game in the future.
