Although Nintendo Switch officially won Black Friday and Thanksgiving when it comes to being the best-selling item of the season, the PS4 was definitely no slouch in the sales department either. As a matter of fact, Sony Interactive Entertainment has now revealed that sales of its current generation console have surpassed more than 70 million systems–70.6 million since December 3, to be specific–with the PlayStation VR headset also hitting a milestone by moving upwards of 2 million units.

When it comes to PlayStation VR, the hardware's latest sales feat certainly indicates a growing interest in the medium, especially since it almost took a full year for the headset to hit 1 million units after its release. Then again, the device could simply be seeing positive growth in sales due to the various discounts and price cuts that Sony implemented following its launch, or thanks to the redesigned headset it put out back in October.

In addition to the news of hardware sales, Sony also revealed that more than 617 million PS4 games have been sold to date, both digitally and at retail. Plus, the company has said that more than 12 million PSVR games have been sold as of this month. Considering this, with a slew of highly anticipated exclusives slated for next year such as Santa Monica Studio's God of War  and Supermassive Games' The Inpatient, Sony is likely to see software sales for both PS4 and PSVR to grow exponentially in 2018.

Taking all of this into account, it will be interesting to see if PlayStation VR will be able to keep up its sales momentum and continue to expand the install base for virtual reality users. That said, though, it will be even more compelling to continue tracking how many PS4 systems have been sold, as it could possibly go on to eclipse the PS2–the best-selling console of all time with more than 155 million sold.
