Update 7/24: It's now been clarified that Tomba is not coming to Xbox, despite what its ESRB rating suggests.

Original story follows.

The re-release of the classic PlayStation 1 game Tomba! Appears to be coming to Xbox as well as its previously announced platforms, if a recent ESRB rating is accurate, anyway. Tomba was first released as a PlayStation 1 exclusive in 1997. A side-scrolling platformer, Tomba was notable for its unique art style and Metroidvania gameplay elements. The game didn't sell all that well when it first launched, but it was popular enough to justify the development of a sequel, Tomba 2: The Evil Swine Return.

Tomba is remembered fondly as one of the best PS1 platformers, but it's unfortunately somewhat difficult to play nowadays. Those that don't have a copy of the PS1 original can purchase it on PS3, but at the time of this writing, the game is not playable on modern platforms. That will change on August 1, when Tomba: Special Edition is released for PS5 with various enhancements.

Classic PS1 Game Coming to PS5 on August 1

A classic PlayStation 1 game from 1997 is confirmed to be launching on the PS4, PS5, Switch, and PC just a few months shy of its 27th anniversary.

Besides PS5, Tomba: Special Edition is also coming to PC, PS4, and Switch, though a release date for those versions of the game has not been announced at the time of this writing. There's been no mention of an Xbox port for Tomba: Special Edition, but the ESRB rating for the game has indicated that such a project may very well be in development. The ESRB has given the game an E10+ rating (the original was simply rated E for Everyone), while listing it as coming to PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox Series consoles. If the Xbox version of Tomba: Special Edition does exist, hopefully Limited Run Games offers some clarification sooner rather than later.

Tomba: Special Edition Listed for Xbox

Those excited about Tomba's big comeback on modern consoles should note that the sequel is getting similar treatment. A specific release date hasn't been announced at the time of this writing, but a Tomba 2: The Evil Swine Return re-release is coming to all the same platforms as Tomba: Special Edition at some point in 2025. If Tomba: Special Edition is coming to Xbox this ESRB rating indicates, one has to imagine that the same will hold true for the new version of Tomba 2: The Evil Swine Return.

Limited Run Games has been using its Carbon Engine to bring classic games from yesteryear to modern platforms with a great deal of success. Besides Tomba, fans of classic platformers will also want to keep an eye on Limted Run Games' Gex Trilogy re-release, which will bundle the three PS1-era Gex games into a single package.
