A lot of subscriptions or similar services in the gaming industry are pretty simple to track. Epic Games Store gives out free games every Thursday, Xbox Game Pass has two "waves" of announcements alongside a couple of surprises every month, and Sony has a very simple Wednesday-reveal/Tuesday-release cycle for PS Plus. Of course, sometimes plans go awry and fans are left waiting for a new set of games. It's happened before and it'll happen again, but if the PS Plus free games for May 2024 are not announced on April 24, fans shouldn't be upset.
If this does happen, it's not a matter of Sony or PS Plus not having something ready to announce; instead, it's a simple disturbance to its pattern. PS Plus Essential, Extra, and Premium reveal a slate of games and add them on the following first or third Tuesday of the month, give or take a little play with the PS Plus Extra and Premium games. The PS Plus Essential pattern is sometimes oversimplified as revealing the new slate on the last Wednesday of a month, which would leave some suspecting April 24 24 as the reveal date. However, it is a wee bit more complicated than that.
Where's the PS Plus Free Games for May 2024?
May 24 is the last Wednesday of the month, but the Tuesday that follows it is actually the last day of the month, May 31. If Sony did announce the new PS Plus games on May 24, it would actually be about two weeks before the games were added on May 7. To some, this may make the reveal seem like it's coming "late," but days and semantics aside, it's actually already baked into the pattern. It's not simply the last Wednesday of the month, but the last Wednesday ahead of the first Tuesday of a new month. This indicates that the PS Plus free games for May 2024 will be revealed on May 1 and added on May 7.
This means, until then, fans can still claim the PS Plus free games for April 2024: Immortals of Aveum, Minecraft Legends, and Skul: The Hero Slayer. The former is a magic-based first-person shooter, Minecraft Legends offers a fun story and PvP/PvE twist on the core elements of the franchise, and Skul: The Hero Slayer is a roguelike action platformer where players are, essentially, the villain.
For anyone wanting to delve into these games, they should be sure to claim them before the clock strikes midnight on April 6. As to what will replace them on PS Plus is anyone's guess, but PS Plus Essential, Extra, and Premium will be following a strong month for Sony's premiere subscription service.
