Many PS4 or PS5 owners likely have the PS Plus reveal-release cadence memorized, as Sony almost always reveals the upcoming games on the final Wednesday of a prior month before releasing them on the first Tuesday of the actual month. Last Wednesday, Sony confirmed that the PS Plus free games for May 2023 were Grid Legends, Chivalry 2, and Descenders, and these three titles are available now.

As a whole, many may feel the PS Plus May games are somewhat lackluster. Each has solid reviews, but they are all rather niche: Grid Legends is a racing game, Chivalry 2 is a medieval combat game, and Descenders is a cycling game. At the same time, fans of those genres who have not checked these games out are in for a treat, at the very least.

Grid Legends and Chivalry 2 are available in both native PS4 and PS5 versions, but Descenders is only native to PS4. Of course, all three PS Plus games can be downloaded to either console; players will just not be playing a PS5 native version of Descenders on their current-gen system. Luckily, the file sizes for these games are not large either. Depending on the console, Grid Legends is 38 or 46 gigs, Chivalry is between 22 and 23 gigs, and Descenders comes in at a rather small 6 gigs.

Of course, those who are perhaps disappointed by this line-up have plenty on the horizon to look forward to. June is always a new month, for example, but Sony will also release the PS Plus Extra and Premium games later this month. Because this selection is usually much bigger, fans are more likely to find something that appeals to them. Next to nothing is known about them yet, but it should be noted that Sony has already confirmed Humanity as a day one PS Plus Extra title. In it, players become a dog that must lead humans through various puzzles and levels, and while it has plenty to offer on its own, it also supports user-generated content.

Sony may have some more surprises to reveal later this month, but that may or may not be related to PS Plus. For example, several gaming conventions or events have already been announced for June, but many fans are eagerly awaiting a PlayStation Showcase. When/if that happens is up in the air, though.

PS Plus subscribers get a handful of games every month.
