[UPDATE: A previous version of this article mistakenly stated that Weird West was a PS Plus game for January 2024 when it was actually Evil West. The Best War Games apologizes for the mistake.]

Summary

  • PS Plus Extra offers a large quantity and high-quality selection of games each month, setting high expectations for the rest of the year.
  • A Plague Tale: Requiem, Evil West, and Nobody Saves the World are the free games available for January 2024, with each receiving positive reviews and offering unique gameplay experiences.
  • PS Plus subscribers can expect variety and enjoyment from the top-down dungeon-crawling RPG Nobody Saves the World.

A new year is right around the corner, with December bringing one chapter to a close and January starting a new one. This is true for publishers, development studios, subscription services like PS Plus, and individuals (who hopefully do not drop their New Year's resolution before January ends). For PS Plus, January can be a trend and tone-setter for a year. For example, last January saw PS Plus add Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, Fallout 76, and more, and it's easy to see how the Essential Tier is essentially the spearhead for a plethora of games to follow with PS Plus Extra and Premium.

Time and again, PS Plus Extra carried the service throughout 2023, proving it was the real "workhorse" tier of the service. Fans typically get nearly 20 games every month, but it's not just quantity when it comes to the titles. It's quality too. As they say, a rising tide lifts all ships, and the excellent titles on the PS Plus free games for January 2024 list set the bar high for PS Plus Extra and Premium, as well as the rest of the year. Starting January 2, subscribers will be able to claim A Plague Tale: Requiem, Evil West, and Nobody Saves the World.

PS Plus subscribers get a handful of games every month, and these are the best the service had to offer across all three tiers in 2023.

While fans should be sure to check out the first game too if they haven't, they can go ahead and claim A Plague Tale: Requiem on PS Plus in January. This action-adventure game has received tons of great reviews, lavish praise, and accolades. In 2022, The Best War Games awarded it with one of the best soundtracks of the year, protagonist Amicia as one of the best characters of the year, an award for its villain, as one of the best Game Pass additions of the year, as one of the best horror games of the year, and as one of the most beautiful games of the year. If any of that strikes a chord with fans, they should be sure to check it out as well as its predecessor in anticipation of the eventual Plague Tale threequel.

An excerpt:

A Plague Tale: Requiem is everything that one could want from a sequel to A Plague Tale: Innocence. It's more ambitious and action-packed than Innocence, and is quite easily one of the best new game releases of the year. The fact that A Plague Tale: Requiem is a day one Xbox Game Pass game adds significant value to Microsoft's subscription service, and anyone with Game Pass should be sure to play it as soon as they can.

PS Plus Free Games for January 2024: Evil West

Boomstick in Evil West

Evil West has a few drawbacks, namely in its short playtime and paper-thin story, but that can easily be overlooked by its core gameplay. As protagonist Jesse Rentier, players hunt vampires, monsters, and everything in between with a powerful gauntlet alongside other evil-killing weaponry. The action gameplay is straightforward, and Evil West is an entire package shipped around this. As such, those who put gameplay over story are likely to enjoy this title.

Fans of no-nonsense action games with old-school sensibilities may still want to take the plunge, and if they aren't bothered by the short length, they are unlikely to walk away disappointed.

PS Plus Free Games for January 2024: Nobody Saves the World

nobody saves the world key art

Nobody Saves the World rounds out the list as a top-down dungeon-crawling RPG, one complete with co-op multiplayer features. The "Nobody" the player inhabits can transform into 18 different forms, progressing through the game to unlock different skills, abilities, and more. Each dungeon is procedurally generated, and while perhaps a bit of a double-edged sword at times, it ensures that players have variety every single time they play. All in all, Nobody Saves the World is arguably the lesser game on this list, but that's like saying an A is lesser than an A+. It's still awesome and high marks nevertheless.
