Sony is expected to reveal the PS Plus free games selection for May 2023 (the Essential tier) on April 26, with their release coming a wee bit later on May 2. This fits the standard reveal-release pattern of PS Plus, but May is perhaps going to need a little more moxie than in past months to stand out.
As a whole, PS Plus offers both quality and quantity to subscribers across its Essential, Extra, and Premium tiers. Even with PS Plus losing 32 games in May, it's hard to be mad given the sheer number of games on the service. Losing 32 games is still going to sting though, especially with games like Marvel's Spider-Man, the Metro titles, and more being included on the May 16 departure list. The service as a whole is going to have to show a little moxie in May, but the PS Plus free games have another issue to contend with.
PS Plus Free Games for April 2023 Set a High Bar for May 2023
While major games like Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Bloodborne have occasionally joined the PS Plus free game service in the past, that's far from its bread and butter. Variety is where PS Plus thrives, and not only did the PS Plus free games for April 2023 bring the variety, but it matched it with quality. Meet Your Maker is a day-one title, a big accolade alone, but its focus on multiplayer and community-driven elements made it a prime selection for subscribers. Meanwhile, some may have already played Sackboy, but claiming a platformer and PlayStation exclusive is a must for anyone who hadn't played it. And to top it all off, Tails of Iron is a well-received indie soulslike game that may not have been on many's radars. All in all, April gave players a little bit of everything.
That means that not only do the PS Plus free games for May 2023 have the massive departure leaning over them, but it also has the previous month to compete with. April, arguably, received a bit of a reception boost because it followed a really disappointing March. Generally speaking, March usually features some of the best PS Plus games for the entire year (this is the month that the aforementioned FF7 Remake and Bloodborne joined in the past), but it featured Battlefield 2042, Code Vein, and OlliOlli World. None of these were bad games, but the appeal was much more limited than April's titles.
How May lives up to April and lives down the departure remains to be seen, but regardless, PS Plus has been on a strong streak here lately. Here's hoping it can keep it up.
