Though it can't be confirmed, one title included in this month's PS Plus Extra and Premium lineup could be hinting at a big upcoming reveal. Everything from its removal and recent return to PS Plus to its somewhat awkward placement in the current lineup arouses suspicion that fans of one of Ubisoft's biggest franchises could be in for a treat very soon. The game in question is Far Cry 5, and the reveal — Far Cry 7.

Far Cry 5 Was Removed From PS Plus Less Than a Year Ago and Has Now Returned

It's not very often that games are removed from PS Plus and then added again shortly after, but Far Cry 5 is one of those cases. Prior to its September 2024 return to PS Plus, it was removed in October 2023, meaning it returned less than a year after its removal. Generally, games that are removed from PS Plus aren't added again until much later, so the mere 11 months between Far Cry 5's departure and return seems suspicious. It could be that Far Cry 5 has been re-added to PS Plus so soon to tease an impending reveal for Far Cry 7.

Far Cry 5 Is a Bit of an Outlier in PS Plus September 2024's Extra and Premium Lineup

Another indicator of a possible upcoming Far Cry 7 reveal is Far Cry's placement in the lineup. Of the majority, Far Cry 5 feels like one of the most distinctive. Under the Waves, Night in the Woods, Space Engineers, and Road 96 all seem similar in that they specialize in atmospheric storytelling, whereas Far Cry 5 centers around its open-world and emergent gameplay. Additionally, the majority of September 2024's Extra and Premium titles offer vastly different gameplay from Far Cry 5, appealing more to casual gamers than fans of the Far Cry series.

Far Cry 5 is also one of the most divisive installments in the Far Cry series, provoking feelings in players of either extreme love or hatred for what it offers, so it's interesting why Sony would choose to reinstate it now of all times. Perhaps Far Cry 5 has influenced Far Cry 7 in some significant ways, meaning the next installment will be more like Far Cry 5 than it will the others.

Far Cry 7 Rumors and Franchise Release Patterns Suggest a 2025 Release Is Possible

All of this speculation is fueled even more by the fact that rumors of Far Cry 7's release window continue to circulate, suggesting it could launch sometime in 2025. Furthermore, almost every Far Cry game has launched a little over a year after its announcement, so if Ubisoft is planning to reveal Far Cry 7 soon, it could lead to a late 2025 release. There is also the time gap between Far Cry releases to consider, which is roughly three and a half years on average. If Far Cry 7 follows that pattern, 2025 would be its release year.

It's possible that PS Plus is simply feeding off all the recent rumors about Far Cry 7 and has chosen to add Far Cry 5 to the lineup to complete its Far Cry collection (apart from the first two mainline games). It just seems strange that PS Plus would remove Far Cry 5, keep the third, fourth, and sixth installments, and then re-add Far Cry 5 to the catalog less than a year later.
