Sony has launched this year's Double Discount Sale on the PlayStation Store for all users whether they are on PS Plus or not. While this marks an exciting time for anyone who owns a PlayStation, subscribers to any tier of the PS Plus service have even more reason to be excited as the discount's percentage for all the available games is doubled with a membership.
The timing of this year's Double Discount Sale coincides with the launch of another event called the PS Plus Festival of Play which includes even more discounts and trials for PS Plus subscribers along with giving players who do not participate in the program free access to online games as well as allowing them to participate in contests. Given the timing of the two events, Sony appears to be using the month of February to aggressively promote the PlayStation platform.
The titles being highlighted for the sale are Gotham Knights, FIFA 23, and The Witcher 3. Alongside these bigger titles are some highly regarded games that fewer people might know about, including the platformer Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series, remakes of two games in the Klonoa series, and last year's Norco, an excellent sci-fi point-and-click adventure game set in Louisiana that follows a young woman returning to the titular town after hearing of her mother's death. Players have until March 1 to get these games at their discounted rates.
While March is typically seen as a month to look out for when it comes to offerings on the service, Sony launching the Double Discounts Sale with the PS Festival of Play around the same time adds validity to the idea that February will be a strong month for PS Plus in years to come. Another idea that can be proposed is that if this March stays a strong month for subscribers, there is the possibility Sony is attempting to make the first quarter of the year an exciting time for PlayStation users.
Adding onto this idea are the excellent additions to February's PS Plus Extra and Premium libraries, including classic RPG The Legend of Dragoon and last year's Horizon: Forbidden West which had been one of the biggest exclusive titles Sony put out for 2022. There is still the possibility that this can all be chalked up to an impressive coincidence that leaves PS Plus subscribers with a fantastic month, but with the Double Discounts Sale also beginning in February this year, it is more difficult to think this had not been a well-coordinated plan.
PS Plus subscribers get a handful of games every month.
