In Project Zomboid, players can choose many different weapons, from guns to axes to what one would consider a regular everyday tool. With the point of the game being to survive as long as the player possibly can, anything is up for grabs. That being said, some weapons are just better than others. The same is true within the different categories of weapons.

There are times when guns are the far better option for survival in Project Zomboid. However, certain guns have much better attributes and offer significantly better benefits than others. Here's a look at the best guns in the game.

8 M625 Revolver

Zombies attacking the protagonist who is standing at the top of a wall in Project Zomboid

The M625 Revolver uses.45 ammo and, as a revolver, offers the perk of not jamming. It has a capacity for six shots and can add some attachments.

While this revolver can deal more damage than other similar guns, it is a bit low on accuracy. However, the aim time is good, allowing for quick preparation. For a pistol, it is significantly louder than the alternatives.

7 M16 Assault Rifle

Zombies swarming a car in Project Zomboid

Players who want to use the M16 Assault Rifle may find it easier to maintain control on single shot rather than fully automatic. While it may seem like a great idea to try running through enemies with full auto on, they'll quickly find they're wasting more ammo than successfully using.

This rifle uses.556 ammo in a 30-round magazine. The ammo comes in a 60-round box. The M16 Assault Rifle can pierce zombies to take down two at once, making it highly effective.

6 M1911 Pistol

A swarm of zombies in a parking lot in Project Zomboid

The M1911 Pistol makes a nice addition to the arsenal for players who need a sidearm. It's not exceptional, and it's not bad. This gun is average all the way around, making it a decent primary weapon.

The M1911 Pistol uses.45 ammo which is slightly more common to find than the others. The gun has a seven-bullet magazine, and the ammo boxes come with 30 bullets, allowing players to reload four full times.

5 M14 Rifle

Zombies in a parking lot in Project Zomboid

The M14 Rifle is a great option because of its high-capacity magazine, which holds 20 rounds. In addition, when players find the required.308 ammo, it comes in boxes of 40. This rifle offers the best accuracy out of all available rifles, making it an excellent choice.

However, players will find this weapon does not have piercing capabilities and is the only rifle with this downside. Instead of shooting through the head of one zombie and into the next, it will only be able to hit the frontmost enemy.

4 Sawed-Off Double Barrel Shotgun

A horde of zombies in Project Zomboid

The Sawed-Off Double Barrel Shotgun offers excellent damage and still features excellent accuracy despite having a shorter barrel. Players will notice that it has a wider shot spread than the traditional shotgun, which may detract from its ability to hit more zombies.

The downside is the inability to add attachments to this gun. With the shorter barrel, there's nowhere to add anything, only allowing players to use it as is. However, when the zombies are moving in, it's a great weapon to have on hand, as it can quickly clear out those that are too close for comfort.

3 Double Barrel Shotgun

The protagonist shooting at an attacking horde of zombies in Project Zomboid

While the Double Barrel Shotgun can only hold two shotgun shells, it offers the highest range and accuracy out of all the shotguns available in the game. Players will also have a lot more control over the spread of their shot with this gun than with other shotguns, as its zone is very narrow.

When they fire a shotgun, they can take out more than one zombie, easily slicing through an oncoming horde. So, despite the shortcoming in low ammo capacity, the Double Barrel Shotgun is a powerhouse for taking down the enemy.

2 Sawed-Off JS2000 Shotgun

Zombies swarming through a fence in Project Zomboid

While the Sawed-Off JS2000 Shotgun is the loudest weapon in the game, it offers excellent benefits, including high damage and excellent accuracy. It's also beneficial because of its high capacity for ammunition, as it holds six shotgun shells.

Players will find that it has a lower range because it is sawed off. However, when faced with zombies that are getting too close, it's a great weapon to have to destroy the incoming hordes, as the shorter range works out perfectly in these situations.

1 JS2000 Shotgun

The protagonist in a burning room shooting at zombies in Project Zomboid

The best gun available in Project Zomboid is the JS2000 Shotgun. It holds six shotgun shells, allowing players to go longer without reloading. Additionally, as a shotgun, it's got excellent damage delivery. Players will also get superior accuracy when using this gun.

Like all shotguns, the JS2000 is very loud, but with its high damage and accuracy, it shouldn't be a problem, as players will take down their targets easily. The weapon's only downside is the need to rack it between shots. However, the character will do this automatically unless the player initiates movement before they can. In this case, the player will have to manually rack the weapon.

Project Zomboid is available now on PC.
