I wanna shed some light on this as someone who actually play it:

-The closing announcement was very suprising and came out of the blue, we literally got an announcement about the western servers closing a week after a major update. A lot of us speculate that something must've happened at WB specifically that urged them to liquidate this project sooner than expected(or warranted).

-"Magic Awakened has attracted a dedicated fan base, but it seems that there aren't enough of them to justify keeping the servers running." Might not be the most accurate given the game apparently IS popular and profitable in the asian servers where it will keep going under a different distributor(Netease), where it was also WAY better managed, with many more events and more free to play friendly model.

-The closure is especially suprising given that the development of the seems to be strictly done through Netease (the CN/TW version gets most features first, which are then ported over, over a tediously long period to the west) WB seemingly doesn't incur the costs of development. There are also game ready features ready to be monetized like new cards and new costumes that WB could put out and monetize before closure for seemingly no cost and pure profit that they are not doing. From a purely pragmatic point of view the game's closure so soon before exhausting these for profit doesn't seem to make much sense.

-The game was very obviously mismanaged and not given a chance in the west. I chalk that up to whoever being responsible for it at WB seemingly having NO faith at all in the product and no will to put in any work to make it succeed. Examples being: ridiculously late release (The chinese servers, have had almost two years to grow before the western release, and they are expected to still keep going like mentioned before) seemingly no marketing budget, no PC client (Netease version has had a PC client for a while now, yet there was no effort made to port it)Slow content releases etc.
