See AllOne Piece: How Zoro's Story Could Be The Most Disappointing in the Series
My bro js said the perfect quote. "I have found that fancy titles mean nothing when it comes to fighting". That is Zoro's ultimate purpose, and his story. He doesn't have a flashy backstory/ground because we will get to see him build it. Just like Luffy, there's nothing interesting about their stories, because they will make it in the anime itself. They will rise from nobodies to the king of the pirates and the strongest swordsman. Now that's more interesting in my opinion, no? However, it depends from character to character. Everyone in the crew will grow, one way or another. For people like Nami, Sanji, Chopper, Robin, Franky, Brook and Jinbei, they have deep and detailed backstories. The way they grow is learning from the past, maybe changing their ways or even having character development (Nami Sanji Robin and Chopper had alot of character development). But then we get to characters like Luffy, Zoro and Usopp. They are nobodies. Their backgrounds are boring, and their backstories don't make it any better (Nami and Chopper have very boring backgrounds but their stories make up for it, while though Luffy Zoro and Usopp's backstories were sad to some extent, it was more of a promise to grow. Like they didn't actually go through any hardship, they just lost someone and promised themselves and someone to become stronger). So now we're watching these three make their stories, we're watching them make a name for themselves, and get life lessons to help them grow. (Zoro in baratie, luffy in shaboady, and Usopp in water seven-enies lobby).
So yeah, that's it for my little rant. It's not necessary for every single character to have an interesting backstory/ground.
