You might have something mixed up. Stamina is a feature intended for the not-so-great swords to match the greatness of the great sword. If you're ever not at the level where maximum might triggers, which is at 100%, you either failed to tackle, block or offset an attack, or you cut a recovery shorter by rolling.
What I'm saying is, get maximum might and skip stamina surge.
